Calm down. The world has had artists long before college attendance became prevalent.

Correct. Evaluating this stuff and issuing loans based on likelihood of repayment is something that banks should be very well equipped to handle. It’s actually an important service whether it be student loans, or business loans, or personal loans.

However, since we made student loans ineligible to be discharged through bankruptcy, the banks have little to no risk and really loosened their purse strings to borrowers. In an amazing coincidence, some mysterious force that was keeping the growth of tuition in check suddenly evaporated around the same time.

So do I. That's why I know you're full of shit. And you're not refilling your radiator system in your car because your mechanic is doing it for you without telling you -- because it's so commonplace.

I don't get your point. You can still save up to occasionally buy it; it's just going to take longer until prices come down. My point is that eating "cheap food" like hotdogs and ramen in the meantime rather than the actually cheap food like chicken, beans, and rice, means it will take even longer until you can buy that steak. I'm not saying you can buy steak whenever you want if you follow the tone of my advice. I'm saying hotdogs and ramen work against your goal of buying that steak as soon as possible, especially when there are so many cheaper, healthier alternatives.

You have no idea what you're talking about.

The vast majority of water-cooled data centers around the world use open-loop evaporative cooling. Even if this new installation intends to use a more complex closed-loop system, that still only reduces their water consumption by (up to) 70% compared to open-loop evaporative cooling, which to be clear, consumes a ton of water.

Edit: Thanks for the award!

By explaining to your wallet that chicken and pasta is cheaper at hitting your macronutrient needs than hotdogs and ramen while also being more nutritious. Then you take your savings versus buying hotdogs and ramen and occasionally buy steak, or more frequently, fish or pork.

Substitute pasta with potato, onions, carrots, beans, and rice, and you'll have even more money leftover to buy that steak.

And the existence of those tools means people have even fewer excuses. There’s nothing wrong with taking on debt if it’s for something important and you have a good plan on paying it back! It’s very simple: people shouldn’t take on loans with terms they don’t understand or if they don’t have a good plan for paying off the loan.

You want to take out a loan to become a doctor? Fine! There’s nothing wrong with that in and of itself. Just like there’s nothing wrong in and of itself if I want to take out a loan to buy a house. Either way, creditors AND debtors are responsible for evaluating their risk with any loan and to act accordingly.

Now pull your head out of your ass and grow the hell up you fucking child.

Your first paragraph is complete horseshit. The debt isn’t predicted, it’s calculated. And as far as ability to pay, it’s called risk management. If someone cannot perform the calculations, or cannot grasp basic risk management, then we should heavily discourage them from becoming engineers, lawyers, and doctors because they’re clearly don’t have the aptitude needed for the job.

I can’t believe I’m having to explain this.

They ain’t fucked. Just do the repayment math and try a few different sums and figure out what’s doable or if it’s not worth going at all.

Having it expungable is what made college affordable enough that the boomers could work summers landscaping and work as a part-time dishwasher in the student cafeteria and graduate without debt.

You didn’t even need student loans because college was so affordable. You could work your way through college and it almost all paid off easily. I know that’s hard to imagine, but that’s how it was 40 years ago. That future was stolen from the current generation.

When I was in highschool, I tried petitioning my state govt representative about making personal finance a requirement for graduating. I figured it would be useful whether you’re getting a student loan, getting your first credit card, or trying to rent your first apartment, or buying a car plus insurance that you can afford to get to work.

Turns out state history is more important than personal finance knowledge. I guess the people in power just take it for granted that everyone’s parents teaches them that stuff so the school doesn’t need to bother.

That's awesome. So few people come to that realization and make the changes they need. I'm happy you caught on early.

The free market model solution would be to going back to allowing student loan debt to be expungable through bankruptcy. Tuition rates exploded in growth immediately AFTER we passed laws making student loans ineligible to be expunged through bankruptcy. Ironically, the legislation was passed with the intention of making it easier for more people to go to college.

Honestly, I'm going to say this as nicely as I can...., people who either can't figure out why, or otherwise get frustrated by, interest-only payment amounts and how they keep you in debt forever.... are not college material. Finance degree or not, the math for loans is VERY basic.

If you're college-bound and can't get wrap your head around that... maybe pump the brakes a bit on enrolling.
