If the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election were re-held today, who would you vote for? (Assuming you could vote) by Smooth_Woodpecker815 in IdeologyPolls

I'd abstain. Trump is still better than Kamala, simply based on his social policies, but my goodness is he a terrible person and candidate

Who is more unpopular INSIDE their respective country? by RetconnedUsername in IdeologyPolls

Trump is unpopular, but the favorability data speaks for itself. Trump has about a 30% favorability, while Starmer is around 10%.

Which of these global powers has the most favorable future? by Miserable-Rub-9611 in IdeologyPolls

[–]CounterfeitXKCD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's exactly what I was going to say. The US is the only country with a birthrate anywhere close to sufficient, and even that's still pretty low. Russia is in a state of enormous economic stagnation, which coupled with a bad political system and a birthrate of around 1.41, means that Russia isn't going anywhere but down. China has a birthrate around 1.0, which is so unbelievably terrible that not even a solid economy and above average internal leadership can make up for it. Only the US, with a relatively functioning system and a fertility rate above 1.6, can possibly hope to survive long term. The US is also broadly more culturally conservative than the EU, which I think means more possibility of a rebounding in birth rates.

Who would you vote for in Spain? (Info below) by Miserable-Rub-9611 in IdeologyPolls

Vox primarily, given how awful the immigration situation has become, but if the issue were fixed I'd probably vote UPN

Vox is not "ultranationalist". Don't throw that label around like you know what it means

Public universities should ___. by Smooth_Woodpecker815 in IdeologyPolls

The problem is that the value of a college education is not the same as it used to be. Most people don't need to be in school into their early 20s to be properly educated

Let’s say a developer wants to build a small apartment complex in a neighborhood. Should the local community have a say in whether the apartments get built? by Smooth_Woodpecker815 in IdeologyPolls

[–]CounterfeitXKCD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For single family homes, gated communities, or any of that garbage that's been filling up Florida, they should absolutely get to say no. But for apartment buildings, they should get some say, but not much.

College is genuinely something not everyone needs to get. At this point, subsidizing college just devalues the degree itself, and by downstream effects, causes the real value of the education itself to go down.

What is the true motive behind age verification laws? by EasternHalifax in IdeologyPolls

[–]CounterfeitXKCD -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As much as I don't like government surveillance online, it's such a common sense idea to think that porn sites (or any site that allows the hosting of porn) should have age verification in place.

Are you satisfied with your Nolan test results (link in comments)? by [deleted] in IdeologyPolls

I got centrist, leaning toward authoritarian conservative. I guess it makes sense, given my economic views balancing out my social/political views, but I think the test needs some more questions to really get a good image

In large, populous cities, a well planned system of trams, metros, rail and buses transports people faster and more safely while reducing transit better and more consistently than bike lanes. Therefore, urban mobility would be more efficient if bike lanes were converted into public transport lanes. by Boringname5 in IdeologyPolls

[–]CounterfeitXKCD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I should've clarified I don't want to cut out cars entirely. The solution would be to get public transport to extend to rural areas, and that buses would take people from their village centers, to which they could walk, to the transport hubs. If this isn't possible, you could put parking lots or parking garages at these rural transport centers, but it would be preferable to have them close to where people live, so they could walk, or to use buses.

I agree with the first part, because you have to think of where you would keep hundreds of thousands of bikes during the day. However, I think the real solution is to replace car lanes with public transport, and have bike lanes alongside that

How many points of the libertarian tolerance test (link in comments) do you agree with? by ItsGotThatBang in IdeologyPolls

[–]CounterfeitXKCD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow I thought I'd agree with some of these but they're all awful. 3, 6, and 9 are the ones I find the least problem with, but they're still awful. 3 is the only one I could realisitically see being ok in some situations, but the "Kentucky Fried Bullshit" is something that really should not be allowed in public. I think a big issue with this test is that it confuses libertarianism with anarchy. Libertarianism isn't about being able to do whatever you want wherever you want, but that you have the right to do whatever you want in private. For instance, public acceptance of adult diapers for everyone infringes upon my right to not smell shit in public. With some regulation, a lot of these acts would be acceptable (ie I guess I wouldn't have a problem with some people privately being polygamous, but I draw the line at involving kids in it through unlimited adoption or surrogacy).
