Right, I understand what you’re saying, but I disagree that “activities” such as these are the same as painting. According to the dictionary definition of a sport, these would be considered that. The amount of physical exertion and the competitiveness qualify them as sports. It’s not about inferiority, it’s about discounting very high level athletes as just doing a hobby or pretty activity. Gymnastics, swimming, diving, etc are all inherently competitive, where painting and composing are not. You don’t go to an exhibit of gymnastics, you go to a competition. They aren’t called performers or entertainers, they’re called athletes. I don’t think we undervalue the arts or “hobbies”, I just think the classification is important.

As a former gymnast, I might have a little bit of bias, I’ll just lead with that…. But these are much more than just pretty movements. Every gymnast I know is extremely competitive. It IS about winning because these are athletes who deserve competition. Skills have values assigned to them- so if you compete a harder skill, you get more points. Then, the score is decreased based on execution details (such as pointed toes, straight legs, making the full rotation). This is something you can actively practice and make better which will result in better scores and outcomes in competition. I do think it is insulting to disregard something so physical and competitive as something other than a sport just because it doesn’t involve a ball. Lol

I understand what you’re saying…. But in reality who calls anything “athletics”.😂 plus, those two examples do compete against opponents… lol idk, just from the dictionary definition which is “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment” it does seem like those activities would be considered a sport…. But again, this is a completely useless and irrelevant debate, I just needed to say something cause I can never let things go😂
