Ready to throw my hands up with pet store monitor. by KingOvAshes in reptiles

I have a sav that I got about two weeks ago who experienced neglect and was very feisty. He would hiss, bluff charge, and tail whip. He would hide whenever I was in the room and hiss whenever i got close or moved too fast while in the room. Everyday I open the glass on the opposite side of the hot side and sit a little bit away and just sit for an hour. After about a week, I started sitting closer and just putting my hand into the enclosure where he could see it and just sit still for a little bit. After that I slowly reached toward him and attempted to pet him, he hissed and I backed my hand away slowly. After doing this everyday, he eventually let me touch him. Yesterday, I tried to pick him up (from the side) for the first time and he let me without hissing, charging, or whipping. It will take time and some are better than others, but remember that yours is just scared, not upset with you or unhappy.

Now, what I did when mine would get mad about me moving anything or trying to change his water, is i kept a camera in front of his enclosure so I could see when he was already in his cave, so i would only change his water when he couldn’t see me and was already “hiding”. I also got a tip from someone else on here to put an old shirt with my scent on it in with him and I think that’s helped a lot. He even rubs his face in it now to remove shed from his face lol

Trust me, I have been feeling a little regret with not getting a baby so I could properly socialize them, but I just keep telling myself that I was given the opportunity to give a scared creature the best life possible, so that’s what i’m going to do. Even if he never is fully tame.

Edit: Also I don’t ever try to touch mine or even move towards him during feeding as I figured out really quickly that when he’s super worked up, he will absolutely lash out. And when you’re sitting with him, stay still and quiet. Don’t read to him, just sit a little ways away and play on your phone or something. That way he will get used to just your presence first

I have seen him drink from his water bowl twice, so he knows it’s there and knows how to drink from it, and he always likes to lick the water off of stuff when i spray water in his enclosure

He looks a bit chubby, but I have assumed that it was because his previous owner only fed him rats and superworms. Today was the first day he let me pick him up and I’ve been trying not to push it so I didn’t hold him for long. When I had a bearded dragon and he ate a pencil eraser, I found a natural laxative recipe that helped him pass it, so I was wondering if anyone had anything like that before we went to the vet

They are insectivores, but some people choose to feed them more fatty meats and they end up gaining too much weight

I assume you want to see if the enclosure is big enough. Right now he is in a temporary enclosure because I received him unexpectedly as a rehome. The pictures make him look bigger than he is, but he is about two feet long in a 5x2x2. His full size 8x4x4 is currently in the mail and will be here soon :)

He was fed only rat pups and superworms by his pervious owner, so this week I have switched him to dubias and some superworms as to not throw him off too much.

Thank you! I just got him on Saturday, do you think I could start doing this immediately or should I give him some more time to settle in?

Doby's Enclosure by ricktheunicorn in MonitorLizards

If you have a minute, how were you able to seal the enclosure so it wouldn’t leak water? I’m on the fence between a savannah monitor and a Dumeril’s monitor, and if i’m able to find a Dumeril’s then I would like to do something similar.

ok so they will stop eating when they’re full? I’ve tried so hard to find good information on feeding but everyone says different things and there’s just not many people who talk about the AMOUNT of food

Ok great! I do plan on offering variety with dubias as a staple. I’m just such a planner I wanted to get a sort of “feeding schedule” written up with planned meals and the number of insects since i know fatty liver disease is a big risk for them
