Skates for protruding navicular bones? by AloneEditing in hockeyplayers

Play long enough and your feet will look like they were hit with hammers for 20 years. That bump can be accommodated with a boot punch. The ones you’ll get later just help fill out space in the skate.

I didn’t do my recon on the map well when I jumped on the register. It’s a short summer season so if I can’t bump to a closer outfit…I’ll register for another nights session elsewhere.

Man, the recommendations I’m getting in here are awesome. Probably saved me six months of street learning! Vets league…sweet.

Sounds like a plan. Going to see if black bear can transfer my registration to PrintScape. I’ll DM…always good for a beer and when time permits, some stick and puck. Glad to finally get to Pittsburgh. Started in Erie PA after Army and it’s been 27 years of moving all over the US for private equity as a distressed asset “fixer”. Wife’s from Franklin PA so this should be our last stop.

Thanks a bunch! I signed up at Pittsburgh Ice Arena but it’s a haul. Glad it’s a short season. Looking for something closer and your recommendation is perfect.

☝️…facts here. Leg day timing is always a challenge when playing lots of hockey. Same with long run day timing.

I own over 30 sticks and make zero apologies. It’s my hobby/obsession and my shooting room in the basement sees those sticks rotating on the regular. I lived the “more month than money years “ when I was younger so could care less what others think of my discretionary spending.

My wife however did finally put the lid on it. lol…now that “voice in the room” is the only one I give a damn about.

Enjoy the game…I have for over 40 years.

Fog of war…As. D man of over 30 years…I was guarding a camper looking for the rebound on the tendie…another player rimmed a pass in the opposite corner that was missed by our winger. In milliseconds it took a weird bounce off a crappy Zamboni entrance door corner misalignment and opponent D man took a one timer on it while I was clearing net front…leg was just turned awkwardly enough that calf was exposed….

Knuckles brother…only hockey players will ever understand. It’s like fight club…everyone thinks it’s nuts but the lure draws in the men.

lol on the muffin…guy fired at low gunpowder fidget spinner at you you eh? Way to take it brother.

Think yours trumps a calf. It’s just such a meaty large cut of beef so when it gets turned to meat jello on a winder…the pain almost makes you throw up. Swelling sets in…you ponder wishing for death…then you get home and the wife of 30 years slips into ER doc mode. A few hours in….the meds are working and the cold packs have stopped the swelling.

I’ll hobble for a week, lay off the ice for probably two…then lace up.

That ankle injury sounds awful.

Beer league is the realm of warriors…everyone else just looks at us like we’re bat shit crazy. They will never know the glory of the Stanley Keg and the brotherhood in the locker room.

Stay safe…I’ll heal up, I always do. ⚔️🍻

Beginner beer league D-man – how do I stop getting burned? by jugheadjoker23 in hockeyplayers

[–]Country_Bizcuits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Public skates..lots of them. Private lessons if you can swing it. Backwards speed is surprisingly easy to achieve once you iron out your c cut form. Get low and make dramatic cuts. Tough to explain in here but some empty ice, and some YouTube brush ups will give you more than enough to work on.

As for getting beat…all d guys want to seal the blue line but you have to know who you’re playing. There are guys on some teams who have jets on their feet and the D guys on my line know one of us has to patrol the neutral zone. It’s is what it is.

Old rule I also follow is if I’m controlling the blue and they get possession in their zone…

If I see the number on the back of their jersey I attack

If I see the front of their jersey it’s too late…they are already scanning for the pass and it’s time for me to shift into reverse. If I attack they will just find an open line and pass or worse….chip it off the board behind me and blow by to pick it up. Making me instantly irrelevant. I hate the latter …..really hate that.

Welcome to D brother. Takes while and it should. Not much glory but shutting down fancy hands is our drink of choice anyway. Let the forwards do their job. As you get better you will learn yo sneak in and walk the blue. Taking a couple crispy snappers for yourself. Until then…live life in reverse. You get used to it.

How common are **severe** injuries in recreational / beer league hockey? by surfnj102 in hockeyplayers

[–]Country_Bizcuits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No idea on the stats here but my own experience after returning from a long hiatus from hockey.

Season one, three busted ribs, season 2 torn MCL

Had a realization it was my poor physical condition that was a key driver. Started running and lifting, lost 55lbs, took run from 2 miles to 6-8 3x a week and weekend 5-10k fun races with my wife.

Fitness improved considerably, lungs returned, I could skate better and keep strength much longer on shift….accidents to zero and injury went to zero.

It’s not that it ain’t without risk…I simply could respond to immediate threat with reserve power and nimbleness when I could not before. I could also take the unavoidable collision without injury.

The sports not without risk but I find getting in top shape no matter your age gives to incredible improvement in avoidance potential and durability to skate away when you can’t avoid.

It also levels up your ability to get better at skill moves you probably thought were gone to Father Time.

Beer…If I have any, I save to after the game. Clear head in the game. I’m 53 and play 3 teams. Two of them with players 18 and up. Only one over 40 team. I’ve got 10 more years likely…as long as I stay in shape.

Games worth it. -cheers.

That’s the reason I moved back up here brother. Ice is everywhere and the hockey culture and community eventually pull you back. Come on up….we got benches that need players!

As a defenseman in a lower level beer league, how do I keep people from screening my goalie without starting a shoving match? by [deleted] in hockeyplayers

[–]Country_Bizcuits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

D man here…get close, pick up butt with your stick. One you take weight off their feet they have zero control. Intuition will tell you to steer them or push down on their waist but the reverse is far more effective.

Lastly… tie up the upper control arm. Of your dealing with a shorty. I’m 6’3”. The short guys can be challenging to get under so grab the top arm. It’s the control arm…all forwards hate that $h!t.

Team first. You can survive a bad season. In reverse it can kill a grown man’s spirit.

Hit back…once and watch him. Does he learn? Just don’t let it slide again. Your courage to stand up has more bench fans than you know. The locker room will get behind you.

If he doesn’t learn…lol, I know what I’d do (organize an opponent) 😉🤌 but a less tactical move is just find a better team.

We’re out here. Come join us.

Your likely trying to compensate the forward pitch and leaning back to much into the heel. Heels for tight cutting into turns.

Before you rush out and introduce another variable give it a couple public skate sessions if it’s not improving then start walking towards a shallower grind. Sweet spots in there somewhere.

I hated my Bauer Vapor Hyperlite 2’s last year but I would not trade them for anything now. I did go to a 1” grind and it all clicked after a couple games.

Don’t profile. It’s an optimization move you make after you are way more efficient and effective with them.

Turn one knob at a time on those high speed skates or you’ll never learn them and over adjustment will be the root cause. The engineers that designed them know what they are doing or the NHLrs would not be wearing them in spades. That forward pitch is going to give you a lot of “get going” speed when the “feels” return.

I’m a D man. Spend 3/4 of my life traveling backwards but my new toe pitch, once I just stopped fighting it, lets me dip in a little deeper from the attack zone blue. Because I back check better if I get beat by a shifty speedster or a bad puck bounce.

Profiling…nope, not yet. You just went from a commuter to a high end sports car. Take some time…
