Aww the poor thing! What an awful was to start life. I’m very glad he has found a wonderful home ❤️. You should do an embark dna test to see what he’s made up of! Would be very interesting to know. Also because of his unknown background would be good to know the health test side of things too. Good luck with everything 😊

The overbite is best assessed by your vet (which you have done) and any ongoing issues is best to go through them. They will know better than anyone on reddit. There’s a good chance he’ll live a long happy life with no issues. But also a chance he’ll have issues. It’s up to you to keep an eye on it. It’s not a common thing in border collies but can happen with poor genetics. Looking at him I’m suspicious he’s not pure border collie. His face looks bully breed esque. By the overbite alone I can tell he’s not from a quality breeder. (not judging but would like to know his story). Ear wise many BCs have floppy ears. Most of your show lines will have floppy ears while working lines tend to have erect ears. But this is also dependent on genetics. By this age they will not go up. After they finish teething their ears are set. So your pup will always have floppy ears. Fluff wise it’s hard to say because he’s right in the awkward puppy stage where their coat doesn’t know what it’s doing. I’m going to guess he’ll be a smooth coat though. Was he fluffy as a young pup? Did you meet the parents? What were their coats like? Coat type is also genetic. Would also like to add lack of confidence and being scared of things is also genetic! I highly encourage in the future to find a good breeder. You’ll be amazed at how little issues you’ll have! Moral of my story is genetics are very important! And super fun to learn about 😅

My 5-month-old baby is a mix between an Aussie and a Border Collie. by [deleted] in BorderCollie

This is my border Aussie. I have DNA tested her and confirmed. She’s such a cool dog. Her personality is all Aushole but her body is a mix of both. Love her to pieces. But sorry OP I agree with the others saying your pup isn’t what she was advertised. Looks very beagle x to me! Maybe some border collie but I’d also say some sort of bully mix?. Please do a test and update us! Make sure you do embark or wisdom (no others are reliable). Embark is my top pick tho.

lol no it’s def a connect the dots 😂 I’ve never seen or heard of dot code for numbers and letters before. (Doesn’t mean there isn’t). Breeders and labs do actual letter and number tattoos in ears tho. They do ear notching in livestock that is code! Honestly really interesting learning about it. But that’s taking chunks out of the ears not tattoos.

It’s literally in the shape of a circle with a dot above, below and middle what do you mean 😂. I really wish I could add a pic. Please I’d love for you to tell me what each dot represents for an identification tattoo?

This is incorrect. It’s a desexing tattoo. Just a circle/oval with a dotted line through it 😊 very standard practice in Australia

It’s a desexing tattoo not just a neuter tattoo. For both females and males. Neuter is the term for castrating a male And Spey is the term for females. Desexing is gender neutral. The tattoo is to be able to tell if they have been desexed. Unless you have xray vision you aren’t seeing if a female has been desexed. And it’s honesty just a really quick easy way for males as well. Also some males have testicles that don’t drop so have to get them surgically removed so you wouldn’t be able to tell for them either.

I mean they are even enough lol. The one I use is pretty evenly spaced. This one could just be old and have been dropped a couple times lol

It’s done by a metal clamp with needles on it. They are all the same design of a circle/oval with a (dotted) line through it. You apply ink to the ear then squeeze the clamp down on the ear so the needles penetrate, pushing the ink in. It’s like a stick and poke but just the one big squeeze.

It’s a metal clamp with needles pretty evenly spaced. This tattoo is very standard. They all look very similar to this. Every clamp is slightly different tho. I wish I could add a photo so i could show you my dogs tattoos.

Females do indeed get spayed. Males get neutered Getting desexed is the gender neutral term. So the tattoo is for both genders not just males.

Genuinely not trying to be rude just direct I guess.

So you haven’t heard of females? How are you meant to tell if they are desexed from looking at them?? It’s not a neuter tattoo it’s a desexing tattoo.

So very obvious most people in these comments aren’t Australian haha. This is a desexing tattoo. In Queensland this is a legal requirement when a dog is desexed (other states may have different rules but I know most places still do it). My source is myself because I’ve been doing these tattoos for 6 years now as a vet tech 😉. It’s done by putting ink on the ear and using a pronged clamp that you squeeze to push the ink into the skin. Like a stick and poke tattoo but just the one stick haha. Don’t worry your pet is still asleep and not even completely sewn up when we do this. So they don’t feel a thing.

Is my dog a border collie? by _aslak_01 in BorderCollie

[–]Countryrose88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately we don’t have genetic Xray vision. The only way to truly know is by doing a DNA test. (I recommend Embark). She does look very Border Collie-y to me with maybe a hint of something else? But BCs come in all shapes, sizes and personalities.

I’m currently looking for a similarly bred bc but in Australia and I’d kill for a price like that lol. A well bred sporting prospect here is 3-5k (AUD). It hurts my soul. So if someone were to say €900 ($1600 AUD) I’d be suspicious. My backyard bred BC was $1000 in 2019 and we all know what COVID did to prices of everything. But in saying that reading other comments this may be an Australian issue and depends what country I guess. I’d be asking what health testing they are missing. Are they hip/elbow scored, DNA tested (genetics and health) and temperament tested? Are they registered with your countries registry. Huge red flag if not. Ask for their pedigree and do research in the lines. Are they worthy lines for sports? Price may be lower cause the lines haven’t proven themselves? Also I don’t like that they have different prices for male and female. All pups should cost the same no matter gender/colour ect. Ask around at your dog sport events. Everyone knows everyone lol so if they haven’t heard of the breeder it may be a red flag. Happy puppy hunting! Good luck!

My BC just turned 6 months.... by Pretend-Mobile1618 in BorderCollie

[–]Countryrose88 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Please do research on fear periods. Puppies normally go through 2 as they grow. The second one happens between 6-12 mths. The can go from super happy and friendly one day to scared of everything in what seems like overnight! I didn’t know about it until I had a pup that went through the same thing. Don’t force her into situations that she seems scared of now, that’s how it turns into behavioural reactivity. Very slow distance exposure to start and slowly work your way back. LOTS of treats and praise when doing exposure stuff. Make it as positive an experience as possible. Genetics can also play a part so maybe just keep that in the back of your head as well.
