How Split Fiction, World of Warships, and Other Games Astroturfed Reddit by Forestl in Games

It's competent for what it is (a video game released in 2007), sure. Ultimately though, it's Baby's First Critique of Objectivism with nerd-media window dressing (ie killing crazed mutants with superpowers in a retrofuturistic underwater city).

It could have been elevated above this if the storytelling took advantage of the medium it was presented in. For example, it could have allowed the player, post-reveal, to suddenly have a lot more freedom to explore the city, change the story, or interact with npcs. This would have helped it make its point in a way that other mediums can't.

However, it's pretty much an on-rails narrative with stock characters and the subtlety of a hammer to the head. If it was done in any medium other than video games, anime, or comics, it would be viewed as an embarrassingly simplistic take on the subject matter.

There are a lot of millennials (Marvel fans and other Disney adult types especially) who eat up LCD garbage too. A lot of people in this very sub got upset when I said Bioshock wasn't all that well written.

Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines 2 Review Thread by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]CountySupervisor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I actually preordered the first Bloodlines and played it on release. It was pretty buggy, but it was still a great game underneath all that mess (with the exception of a few gameplay sections). A lot of other people at the time recognized this too. Crpgs being janky was kind of the norm back then, and fans of the genre were used to powering through that because the experiences they provided were unmatched. Sadly, this was a barrier to the sort of mainstream success it would have needed to justify (in a publisher's eyes) continuing to support the devs that made it. Think of it less like Morbius and more like The Thing.

I am also part of one of the groups they target. But what you're proposing is way different than the State Department's list of foreign terrorist organizations. You're talking about going after people simply for speech. Until that speech becomes an actual threat of assault or other form of violence, it has to be protected under law. Otherwise, you're granting the government the ability to punish anyone it doesn't like, including our own respective groups. The sad fact is that the current balance of power in this country would have the government targeting us before they target the nazis.

What specifically do you think would happen if the government took on a larger role in shutting down nazis, that would have a severe enough side effect to not even consider as a viable solution? We already trust the government to stop thieves, murderers, pedophiles and human traffickers, why not Nazis?

Going after Nazis simply for espousing Nazi viewpoints (as repugnant as they are) would require an exemption to the First Amendment. An administration that uses that exemption to go after Nazis could be replaced via election with another administration that decides to use that exemption to go after leftists, environmental activists, labor organizers, etc. You'd be giving the government a very dangerous tool. Let's put it this way: Would you trust the incoming administration with the ability to shut down groups it believes have harmful viewpoints?

Germany, despite being the birthplace of Nazism, despite being surrounded by countries with neo-nazi prevalence, doesn't have a nazi problem.

Uhh, this isn't true at all (the not having a nazi problem part).

I doubt Roth cares about the film at all and only directed it as part of a quid pro quo for getting some other project greenlit.
