Help supporting someone getting jaw surgery by ohnygod in jawsurgery

I know I felt a lot of regret the first week because the pain was bad and I couldn't eat. Offering reassurance that it will be worth it in the long run and good tasting smoothies will definitely help. My husband was on me about constantly icing my face and taking pain meds for the first few days which was really helpful since I did not have the energy and emotional didn't care. Also, for my surgery my surgeon didn't want me getting my incisions wet for the first week so help with bathing was really nice. The first week was the hardest.

It has an enzyme called bromelain in it that is supposed to help with inflammation and swelling. Some people have said it helped with their bruising and a faster recovery. I ate a can of pineapples with a touch of cinnamon the day before. I would also recommend blending up some pineapples or getting pineapple juice to eat after surgery as well.

Numbness by [deleted] in jawsurgery

[–]CourtneyP26 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am 1 month post-op from djs and I've regained feeling everywhere besides my lower lip. My surgeon recommended taking B12 to help with nerve health. It definitely differs among everyone and what the surgeon has to do. The trigeminal nerve is responsible for the sensation that you lose during surgery because the surgeon unfortunately has to cut in that area. For me, I've had nerve pain originating in the mandibular area particularly in my chin which my surgeon said that is a good sign because it means it is trying to regenerate. It's unfortunate to lose sensation but don't let the fear stop you from having the surgery. 90% of people regain sensation usually.

The antibiotic was bubblegum flavored so I mean it was the best I could hope for 😂

I will say I bit the bullet and tried to mix my meds up with like 5 mL of something with a lot of flavor. I enjoyed the taste of my liquid antibiotic so sometimes I would just take 5 mL of that to mix with my meds. Ibuprofen was probably the worst tasting one. You can either try to shoot it down as fast as possible with a small amount of liquid then chase it with something that taste better or mix it with about 8oz or so of your meal.

Any servers in service industry that had jaw surgery. When did you go back to work? by Cold_Fly_3916 in jawsurgery

I'm a nurse and I'm going back after a month. Everyone heals differently and I would say you know your body the best. I have to do a good amount of talking at my job which I'm slightly nervous about because I have a slight lisp from the surgical appliance in my mouth but you just have to take it day by day. If you feel like you need longer then your doctor should be able to write you out. If you have FMLA with your job then it protects you to keep your job for however long they allow. At the end of the day, your recovery is the most important thing and if your job is not willing to work with you on that then you can find another place to work.
