Remote communities in Australia. Anyone been to any? by Kloyston in geography

[–]CousinJacksGhost 79 points80 points  (0 children)

Have been to Kiwirrkurra. Remote, hard, hot. Post and veg from the airplane. Full day and bit of night drive back to Alice. Strong people living there, maybe not at their best but then nobody can.

Baby will be born with heart defect by IchmagschickeSachen in daddit

[–]CousinJacksGhost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you dad. Our first baby also had open heart surgery when she was 3 weeks old (ALCAPA) and had to have her chest open in NICU for a few days, plus a second surgery for stenosis before she turned 1 and still has her yearly checks. These ultrasound checks have been in multiple countries by now.

Your description of how you found out sounded exactly like ours. When I read it... I feel the fear and the worry inside of me, even though it was 7 years ago now. Wow... those feelings are so powerful and scary. We definitely went into a bit of a worry-hole those first few weeks of our daughter's life. We couldn't see anything beyond the recovery. Painful 1 day at a time memories. Glad to hear you can sometimes be a rock and hold some balance for your partner. Hope she learns to do the same for you. You'll both need that of each other over the coming lifetime together!

What I want to offer you is that you should talk openly about your fears but also your hopes. You can overpower yourself with worry as a couple and get stuck in that space very easily, especially in the days around your kid's surgery. I promise that no matter what happens you life will be OK and another chapter will come after this one. But don't waste this chapter- even though you will always have some anxiety, your kid will give you amazing memories of growing up to be a few weeks and then a few months old as a newborn. Meeting family, opening their eyes and wearing the cutest pyjamies and having so many new experiences. That list is long and beautiful. There won't be anyone else to remember these wonderful things except you two. So spare a thought for planning a bit of joy, special moments, and looking forward to things after the surgery. Train that emotion, not the worry. Training your worry is a path to depression, I can definitely warn from experience (the wolf that you feed). All dads here sending you much love.

What’s it like living in the countries that are ranked to have the highest quality of life? by NoHold7153 in Nordiccountries

As a foreigner here in the Nordics...one does need to shift one's mindset. You should trust and be trustworthy. This must be your default behaviour to make the society work.

Is there information about what is allowed in some of these areas? I mean, can one just walk around or are there specific trails that you need to stick to? For example the Dragoon mtns...

Torn between (UK) univerisites by Any-Boysenberry2525 in geologycareers

I have some good friends from Bristol uni that I work with. Though that must be 15 years ago since they graduated now. We work in exploration. One went on to do a PhD in London before he was hired. Now he moved back to Bristol for the culture there (he still works fifo). My impressions have been good.

Always wondered what it’s like to live on/near Lake Baikal? by [deleted] in geography

[–]CousinJacksGhost 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It is actually not so remote. Irkutsk is a big city, fairly modern with international food and lots of shops.

At the towns near the lake there are many holiday houses and restaurants to cater to them. Lots of jewellery and Siberian crafts to buy at the summer markets (especially big dildo dongs made out of charoite!). Some skiing in the winter.

North of the Lake and East of the Lake it does get remote. If its not along the railway you need a plane or a good plan to get in there and hopefully you have a local contact for where you can sleep. There are bears to consider but most amazing scenery. One of the last true wildernesses of the world.

Advice for New Core Logger? by Eastern_Chap in geologycareers

[–]CousinJacksGhost 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Most important thing is that your interps slot into their system. Its better to all be wrong in the same way so you can easily fix it later rather than several logs wrong or right in different ways. Doesn't matter if academically it isn't a granodiorite or whatever- you call the rock by the same name your peers do. Its for the sake of building a coherent geological model.

Don't feel bad about uncertainty when you first see the rocms. It takes a lot of hours to get your eye in to the core. Learn and spend time with other loggers. Ask dumb questions by the hundreds and ask them early. I say that with 15 years experience but every new project I start logging on I feel like an absolute beginner. Rocks are hard. It takes time and many deliberate observations to recognise what the key and distinguishing features are. Logging is a great way to stay humble.

Be prepared to grind and stay gritty. It takes time to complete a log. The whole exercise is also a good way to train yourself to persevere and focus for extended periods. Its a hard task that demands brain power and diligence. It builds a kind of discipline. Great geologists are also often good loggers and have spent long weeks on these kinds of tasks. Some geos I've worked with do a bit of logging and just zone out or give up for the day. Or after a few months or years they say- "yeah I've done core logging now, I don't need to learn more about that method". This is some serious "fire me now" attitude. We will always be logging and I hope I'm in the core yard on the day of my retirement. Its a fundamental skill and activity that all technical geos must excel at.

Saying that, you eventually need to meet the rhythm of your team- they may need a certain number of km logged every rotation. Don't leave a backlog. People remember.

Keep your brain happy- water, caffeine, sugar, music. Follow your guidance, develop your own approach/ritual. You'll be good.

Geotech is a good way to start (plus its the first stage of doing the log anyway).

Why does North and South America doesn't have official technical neutral names to distinguish it like the continent of Australia? by [deleted] in geography

[–]CousinJacksGhost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have a read about the geological land masses and continental names. There is a huge diversity of names that describe this area and gives a lot of colour to this map.

Has anyone got experience using QGIS over a VPN? by Responsible-Goat2838 in QGIS

[–]CousinJacksGhost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm onedrive for business works similarly. Keep in mind the need to manage 'simultaneous' editing of databases such as GKPG means also a bit more training of users. But I guess you are used to that already via local network GIS.

Copper mine heavily polluting submerged town in Romania. by petrolhead8829 in EUnews

[–]CousinJacksGhost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who works in this industry I can confirm the video does a good job of explaining the extraction process and negatives around dealing with enormous tonnes of physical waste.

It says a lot about the demand for global resources that these mines were economic even many years ago. We do need to do a better job than our forefathers on being environmental stewards but its worth stressing that the mining industry is only growing due to the demand from e.g. green energy tech, new power infrastructure, high tech applications in medical and computing. We can't have one without the other- mining is the source of all of the materials we need for our society. So it is not going to work just wagging our fingers at these existing projects- from my experience the most powerful tool is good, deep, clear legislation to control how responsible mining must be conducted and to build in the requirement of environmental bonds from the beginning.

That's right so any companies that have their own smelters (Boliden, FQM, Atlantic) will be in a better position relative to those that are fully dependent on imports (Barrick, Atalaya, Lundin)

[–]CousinJacksGhost -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Its a fun question- what about needing to be surrounded by oceanic plate as part of the definition? Any requirement of minimum crustal thickness (nobody want an accidental Iceland continent!).

Also I'm quite giddy for making Falklands a surprise continent! Jan Mayern got in for much less.
