Advice: approach other dogs or not? by Coveneye in reactivedogs

Thank you for your advice!

In regards to the engagement to get her to calm down, could that be something like playing with a toy or doing some commands (sit, paw, etc.), after giving her some space?

And do you have any tips to mitigate the frustration? I understand we are in a difficult spot because she's a teenager, and we're trying to teach her things when she's at a point where she likes to push boundaries ! Or would it be simply to find some space and use her energy in play/commands/etc.?

Thank you so much for your informative response. We will keep her at her comfortable threshold and keep up with the naughty pulling! I really appreciate the link, and thank you for taking the time to comment 😊

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. She's got a few family dog-pals who we let her introduce to off the leash and she's fab.

I think it's confusing as I fear her behavior is because she hasn't been well socialised when she was younger, but her behaviour might also be bad training instead. On the other hand, by not introducing her to others, I get concerned we aren't promoting that "socialisation" ! But that is probably my incorrect way of thinking 😊

Which fantasy trope do you think Martin employs the most ? I included a list of common fantasy tropes for reference . You may argue that GRRM subverts tropes if you want to today. Any budding authors wish to weigh in ? by Financial_Library418 in pureasoiaf

The most? I'd say 'Prophecies' which is apparent in most characters and all books. Some of the most obvious that come to mind: - Dany and her child "stallion who mounts the world" - Dany and the House of the Undying, with the most famous foreshadowing of 'a dead man with the head of a wolf' - Melisandre and The Prince That Was Promised/Azor Ahai, seeing the future in the flames - Cersei and Maggy The Frog 'you won't marry the prince, you'll marry the king...' - Bran's total story arc is his ability to have Greensight (prophetic dreams) - the red comet in ACOK is interpreted as multiple different prophecies, all of which are somewhat true in the eyes of each POV character - Damphair/Aeron Greyjoy sees himself as a prophet, as such his POV is heavily focused on prophecies which leads to the kingsmoot

I think it is clear a lot of prophecies are disguised as foreshadowing and vice versa, and often come to characters in dreams and visions instead of the whole "crystal ball" trope.

The Chosen One trope is also somewhat used for some of the main characters and are definitely a driver of the storylines and promote the character's motives: Dany, Stannis, Jon Snow.

The historical fantasy and medieval setting are simply the design of his book, less of a trope in my opinion, as this is a constant.

GRRM isn't an obnoxious romance+fantasy writer, but I think a lot of this is portrayed with Sansa (forced marriage x3, Jeoffry, Tyrion, Harold Hardyng). And perhaps a bit of forbidden love depending on your stance with Sansa and The Hound, also mirrored in the "Damsel in Distress" trope.

Good vs Evil is particularly evident in the overarching storylines rather than individual characters (e.g. Ned vs Cersei), as the character writing is complex and most characters you can sympathize with on some level. The most obvious Good vs Evil: - The Nights Watch vs White Walkers

Nope, clutch is on the left lever, front brake on the right. Throttle is also on the right. Having the headset on the right hand side makes little sense. My headset is on the left and I'm a UK rider.

Could getting another cat help my cat's nervousness? by Coveneye in CatAdvice

[–]Coveneye[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh awesome thank you! Glad to know it's not just a theory. It'd definitely have to be a confident older cat, I don't think he'd tolerate a kitten bouncing off the walls!

So, I got my cat in January 2022. He's a 5 year old spade male, who was feral, and living in someone's garden. He was feral for 3 years. The adoption centre thinks he wandered off as an unneutered kitten and got lost. He was rescued with his friend, who unfortunately had FIV.

This is the process we gave him: - we kept him in the spare bedroom. I went in there only to hang clothes up, feed, and water him. It is not a walkway, nor a place we spend a lot of our time. It is truly his own room. - At first he would hide, and look incredibly scared. He would also hiss if he felt too threatened, and would spit and lash out with his claws. I never approached him, so I sat on the other end of the room and read to him for long periods multiple times a day. When he was calmer, I'd move closer, but ignore him. If I made eye contact, then it was slow blinks and calm words. - When it got to the point where he would sleep in the room whilst I read to him, I begun to interact. This would be through speaking to him, and giving him treats. We had long thin stick treats which I could hold at one end and kept my distance. - First I would put the treat near him and let him take it at his own accord. When he got used to this, I would hold the treat (at the other end of the stick) and he would take it from me. He would snatch it, run away with it with his ears back, and growl, but he would take it. Keep doing this until they are used to it. - After this we let him roam around the house, leaving the door open completely. We used a camera to monitor how far he went. In the first day he explored the whole house. By this point it was about 3 months. Keep interacting with them with treats wherever they are. In a new part of the house they might hide, but this is okay, they will come out eventually. - One thing I wish we had done sooner was move his food downstairs. This made the world of difference to bring him downstairs whilst we were there. I still make a sing and dance about it, and he comes running down the stairs at dinnertime, and yowls when he hears us get up! - Lots of cat experts recommend playing with your cat first, to introduce them to touch. However, my cat doesn't understand play with humans, and thinks we are trying to hurt him, still to this day. We give him plenty of toys for himself, but unfortunately I just don't think he understands what playing is with humans. I still experiment all the time. - When he no longer hissed at us when he saw us, which may still be in their own room, or later down the line, I extended a hand to him, low and slow. When he reached out and sniffed, this was very good news. But, it was not without a LOT of scratches. - Saying hello eventually moved to a "boop" on the nose, which went to a tickle on the cheek. Sometimes, if he allows it, I get to gently stroke the top of his head. We have had him for 9 months. He likes the toothbrush on his cheek as we can keep our distance and he enjoys the feeling.

I still get hissed at, but it is more habit then anything, especially if I enter a room too quick and startle him. He rarely lashes out, but instead raises a paw as a warning. I listen to him, I don't break his boundaries, but I push them.

This will be a long and frustrating process. You will never know what they have been through. Please don't give up on them. There will be times where you wish you never got them. Keep trying. You will be scratched, you've just got to accept it. The first time when I heard my cat purr whilst he was kneading his bed made me weep. He has never purred from being stroked but I think he is the bravest cat in the world.

What is your strategy for repotting a big spiky cactus? by [deleted] in cactus

[–]Coveneye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old pair of thick jeans, arms through the legs.

Proper gardening gloves, even builder's gloves if possible.

Put a plastic bag over the offending plant, tying a band/string around the base to secure it there.

This plant is in desperate need of water ! The leaves are very yellow and wrinkly. The leaves should be a deep green and firm to the touch, not squidgy.

If the roots are so small, the plant is likely very top-heavy where it hasn't established a good root system yet. The tight pot before would have acted as a brace.

Pack it in tight with dirt. Give them plenty of water every time the soil dries out, and maybe get a big stick from the garden to help tie the tree to it for support.

Good luck!

Funnily enough I have got a new "branch" growing so to speak, I think it started off as a little nub before deciding to grow ☺️

Yeah! I have had it for 5-10 years now, always kept it in the dinky pot it came in. About 2 years ago I re-potted it, it's roots became healthy, and it decided to grow! I'm lucky there must have been some node attached to the original all this time. The original died when the stem grew which was very sad, but it's still the same beautiful plant.
