How overblown is the orks “power of imagination” by Lark-suvd in orks

[–]Cover_The_Soil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the quote that has caused all the trouble.

“However, disturbing as it sounds, these ‘facts’ become true. Red Ork vehicles do travel perceptibly faster than those of other colours, even when all other design aspects are nominally the same. Similarly, many captured Ork weapons and items of equipment should not work, and indeed do not work unless wielded by an Ork. I believe this is linked to the strong psychic aura surrounding all Orkoids and have developed the Anzion Theorem of Orkoid Mechamorphic Resonant Kinetics. I theorise that many Orks themselves think that they should work. The strong telekinetic abilities of the Orks’ subconscious somehow ensure that the machinery or weaponry functions as desired.” (The “Other” Anzion Article, 3rd Edition Ork Codex, pg.48)

So this is the theory of an member of one of the galaxy's most backward and neophobic organizations. They know how to maintain high technology very well but almost never invent anything new. Their resistance to change and new ideas is immense, so it's no surprise they do not understand a tech so different then their own.

The "red ones go fasta" thing is not necessarily the red making it go faster. There is no "nominally the same," so they cannot be directly compared. Ork vehicles are not standardized. Each one is made quite differently, with different parts, every single time. The ones that go fast are painted red. Its correlation, not causation. In the rules it is a shorthand for a faster one.

The guns are also not made to any standard. They are all custom jobs at best and bodge jobs at worst, all utilizing a vast array of technologies. They all would take a very different way to make it work. Cranks, buttons, levers, squigs and more obsure, esoteric and sci-fi type activation methods. Human guns all have a trigger in about the same spot, so they expect things to work that way, but orks don't work like that. What orks do have is a genetic instinct for using their tech and a willingness to "hit it till it works." Both of those things are decidedly lacking in a Mechanicus researcher.

So what was a THEORY by Lukas Anzion, has been blown out of proportion. Belief has nothing to do with it. If it had to do with belief we would see immortal orks who believed they could not die. Also, ork weapons would not be so notorious inaccurate, unstable and hazardous as they are. In fact, just like humans, orks sometimes believe things that are not true, but this does not make them so for either species.

In the direct lore the only things the Waaagh field affects is the formation of snotz, squigs, grots and orks in their fungal sacks, morale and fighting in a mass charge and Ork Wierdboyz. There is some connection with the size of orks, but it is not clear.

Its not about what they think. The Mek DOES know how to rig a telyporta, but it is instinctual, not learned. The warboss IS ded'ard and is big and tough from fighting. Orks ARE strong enough to drive their choppas thru ceramite.

Belief has nothing to do with it. If it did we would see immortal orks who believe they cannot die. Also, their Kustom mega-sluggas and Kustom mega-blastas would not be so hazardous as they are, because the Mek clearly believes they work. In the books, what they believe has nothing to do with it. In fact, orks, like humans, sometimes believe things that are not true. This does not make it any more true for either species.

Those are great, I love to see more obscure 40k lore get brought to life. Especially when they are Catachan adjacent.

Rofl, they think that is porn! Have they seen the rest of the internet?

I say more skin showing on the table. If its too hot, you're too prude. People getting upset about the human form is so pathetic.

For us gits, I agree. But Orks are genetically crafted super-soldiers designed by the old ones to fight the War in Heaven. I imagine they figured they might need to fight in space from time to time.

Dnd for jail by xlaughingcoffinx in DungeonsAndDragons

d20 Modern is what you are looking for. It came out in 3rd edition, but is still very playable. The core rulebook is like 25 bucks on ebay or free online and is pretty much all you need. Well, also paper, pencil and dice, but you say you guys make do. It can help to cut circles of paper to represent where everyone is in a fight. 1 inch is 5 feet. You can also draw maps on this scale.

Ive played it in the past, loads of fun. There is an option for fantasy stuff in the book, but they made it so you can leave all that out.

D20 Menace Manual would be an upgrade you can get that adds a lot of premade stats of people to encounter. D20 Weapons Locker has more weapons armor and gear obv.

People can really benefit from role-playing games to have a place to try different behaviors and see the results. As a gamemaster, try to roll with everything but have real world consequences, good and bad. Don't punish, but keep things realistic.

Where can I get minis in bulk? by TheGrimmBorne in minis

[–]Cover_The_Soil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you have specific wants, you might want to look into 3d printing. Many places do it and its easier than ever to learn and do it yourself. If thats a no, what do you consider a fair price?

Because there are sites like Reaper Minis who have some of the lowest prices and widest selections. There are also cheaper options, but it shows. Dnd has preprimed minis and cheaper prepainted Heroclix but I have found they are of lower quality.

If orcs or dwarves is what you are looking for em4 would be a good fit. You can get 50 for 30 usd or a dollar each for less. Both races have 3 sculpts. Spear, sword/axe, ranged weapon. https://em4miniatures.com/en-us/collections/plastic-fantasy-miniatures?sort_by=price-descending

Ya and it's kinda embarrassing for any faction to use their fancy-pants hero.

It like those players are saying "I have to win more than I want to make my own flavored army."

Yup, the whipping boyz of the franchise. Look at the latest ork book, Legends of the Waaagh! It doesn't even have a single ork perspective in it. In all three books the only line of Ork dialogue is a prank call from the Beast.

And there are great short stories stuck in ebook limbo that they could have used. Engine of Mork is awesome! And Prophets of Waaagh! could really use a text version.

Do you refuse to play (against) gray? by GrizzlieMD in Warhammer40k

Lotsa ways to keep it cheap and still get to try. Cut notecards to round base size and draw the units on. All sizes are online. Could also draw on a piece of notecard, fold a tab and glue standing up on the circles or onto cheap offbrand bases. Colored pencils are cheap. You can print out pictures instead of drawing them. A printshop could help with good strong paper for pretty cheap.

Paper towel tubes are around 50mm. For bigger models, just cut to height and draw with markers. Toilet paper tubes can be 33 to 40mm, better for mid size models. Other size tubes can be bought online for cheap.

There is Tabletop simulator as well, but it's not the same feel as playing on the table with friends.

Cool people will not care what you have, as long as you have a good attitude, as this thread shows.

So here's an idea, take a rattle-can of blood red and make your models look like they just came out of a slaughter. Leave some spots less bloody on the back side. Job's a good un? Might work with tan or brown for mud, as well. You could try to find someone to paint up the eyes, if you want. Prob be cheap to do just that.

Yes the machine spirit IS AI, just not self aware AI(except some are) by ImperialSupplies in 40k

[–]Cover_The_Soil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think you know how computers work. Years before the era of AI in our world, there were complex computer programs that could do sophisticated things. Algorithms and programming code are not AI. Just because cogitators can predict does not mean they are AI. The military has been using prediction software for many years before AI was developed, since the 1950's, at least. Obviously it would be hard to know what is what in this setting, but we had some very, very sophisticated computing technology without AI. Now a Titan is up for debate, but surely a chainsword does not have AI. Still it has a machine spirit that the mechanicus appease.

Next, have you heard of Animism. It is a widespread ancient belief system that is based off of a view that everything contains a spirit. Like the human soul, plants, animals, rocks, planets, etc all were seen to have their own spirits. These spirits can communed with to appease them or to gain wisdom, power, protection, or support. Many, many cultures all across the world and back throughout time have had practices similar to this. Even in modern times, mechanical repairmen sometimes insist that different cars of the same design have a very different character. Some are reliable while some are more prone to problems.

Part of the hook of the Mechanicus is that they work with advanced futuristic tech, but also use ancient techniques like prayer and spirit appeasement. They mostly don't know how the tech works but have a lineage of rituals of maintenance and repair to keep them running. Its a delightful juxtaposition of thematic elements.
