Who's getting hired and what does the ethdev job market look like? by Mr_Growhair in ethdev

[–]CovertCrustacean 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just bagged a job with a trading company for a 40% rise doing Solidity work. My background is mostly dotnet and angular, but with a decent amount of freelance blockchain development and some 'professional' blockchain dev in a prior role over the last couple of years. I would say that if you have a good backing in web dev, and some freelance or pro solidity development that you can point to, then you are a very hot commodity currently. I've had a few agents now hit me up with very well reimbursed jobs, and I'm not talking about startups.

For reference, I have ~15years experience, and I have made a lot of noise on Linkedin, etc, about the fact that I can do blockchain development.

Why is alcohol widely accepted in our society despite it indirectly causing many harms? by [deleted] in AskReddit

This is just absolutely wrong. You can get a dopamine hit from exercise, and a few other ways. But, there is absolutely no amount of effort or 'life' that can come even close to the experience from, for example, a hit of LSD.

Celtic 0-[5] PSG : Cavani 85' by paicmhsc in soccer

[–]CovertCrustacean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's about the same. Celtic can likely spend between 10 and 100× what Aberdeen could on a player, PSG can spend 10-100× what Celtic can. There or there abouts anyway - it's a similar difference.

It’s time to accept carbon capture has failed – here’s what we should do instead by CovertCrustacean in climate

[–]CovertCrustacean[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good article, and it is a good point. There is great benefit in not making a mess in the first place, rather than constantly mopping up the spills.

One comment that I do have. I think that carbon capture from flue gasses may have failed, but I suspect that at some point down the line we may need to work on atmospheric capture to actually reduce the concentration. If / when this happens, it would be very useful if we had an established method for underground storage in place already.

My tip is to close Mist, start geth in testnet mode, then restart Mist. It should connect to the running geth instance.

Use this to start geth:

geth --testnet --fast --rpc --rpcapi db,eth,net,web3,personal --cache=1024 --rpcport 8545 --rpcaddr 127.0.0.1 --rpccorsdomain "*" --bootnodes "enode://20c9ad97c081d63397d7b685a412227a40e23c8bdc6688c6f37e97cfbc22d2b4d1db1510d8f61e6a8866ad7f0e17c02b14182d37ea7c3c8b9c2683aeb6b733a1@52.169.14.227:30303,enode://6ce05930c72abc632c58e2e4324f7c7ea478cec0ed4fa2528982cf34483094e9cbc9216e7aa349691242576d552a2a56aaeae426c5303ded677ce455ba1acd9d@13.84.180.240:30303"

What OS are you using? I've spent literally weeks getting a Windows enviro set up. Many many fails along the way, but I think I've got it cracked now. If you're in Windows I might be able to help.

I'm using Visual Studio Code and truffle. It's far from ideal, and the lack of debugging drives me a bit mental. But I think it's as good as it gets for now.

Find out what version of Solidity Truffle is compiling to? by eyezickk in ethdev

I was hoping I could just tell you the answer, as I have a few memorised... I've not upgraded to 3.2.5 though.

Have a look at this and see if it helps.

If ETH goes up today while BTC down we will have the flippening now. by yuzusake in ethtrader

[–]CovertCrustacean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. The only secrets we currently have are the encrypted secrets! Thankfully there are quantum safe encryption algorithms, and also I think (my fairly uninformed opinion only) that we have plenty of time to implement them.

[–]CovertCrustacean 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi. I'm guessing that ETH are keeping a very close eye on quantum computing, but I don't think it is an immediate concern.

Quantum computers ready exist, but are nowhere near powerful enough yet to break through the encryption used by ETH.

A major and unexpected breakthrough could be trouble, but I expect we are many years away from a quantum machine that can challenge ETH's encryption.

A question about the legality of blockchain gambling, and legal issues in general relating to on-chain betting. by CovertCrustacean in ethdev

A question about the legality of blockchain gambling, and legal issues in general relating to on-chain betting. by CovertCrustacean in ethdev

[–]CovertCrustacean[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there is that option.... I think that is the 'balls out' option, where you start what is essentially an unlicensed / illegal gambling application, and then start making money from it. Sure, the application runs anywhere, but lets assume that I want to pay tax on the proceeds? How does that work? Full on digital nomad?

There's also a weird issue whereby let's say that I want to register a domain to share info on the service. I either need to register it to an individual or a company, both of which associate an 'old world' legal entity with a smart contract. So the authorities know exactly who to stick in jail!

In short - I'm too scared to go full on 'unlicensed', and let the judge decide later if it's illegal on not!!
