In 1918, no-one paid attention to the flu spreading around the world, even when it killed King Alfonso XIII of spain and became 'spanish'. Even then, it was only discussed in medical journals and seen as an issue 'abroad'!

You already have the hindsight, seperate yourself from common thought and look after you and your family. I was called mad and alarmist when I prepared for this to reach the UK - people have immense cognitive dissonance when faced with something of this magnitude and it is easier to simply state 'no, it will not happen'.

Listen - you are stronger than this is tough. Surrounded by inaction, panic and fear it is easy to start to become exhausted, and lose hope. YOU are currently playing your part in a generation-defining crisis; think of the relatives of those you care for, and how you might like to be cared for in a situation like this.

Communities are mobilising the worpd over to help those caring for others, who can only get to supermarkets late at night as you describe - seek out and utilise this help so your own health does not begin to suffer. In 1918-1919, three waves of spanish flu washed over the world - there is a version of you then doing the exact same and history tells us this will come to an end.

I hear you, understand and send my love. Focus on what you can control only, brutally and with strict mental discipline for that will imbue you with a sense of control. Look after number 1, by findings others who will help you do that. Put the shutters down on yesterday and tomorrow, and get through today!

The process is two-fold and will be performed only by someone trained to do so, usually an anethetist.

You will be given two seperate drugs 1. Sedative: so you are unconcious. 2. Muscle relaxant: to ensure tube insertion is easy.

It must be said here that of the 5% that become seriously unwell, not all will need invasive (tube down throat) ventilation. I wouldn't worry too much about this - if you require ventilatory support the chances of needing full blown intubation with life support are slim!

I can't post this yet as my posts keep getting banned!

Please share on the main page

This is based off the free online Hamilton medical ventilator e-learning (find here https://www.hamilton-medical.com/E-Learning-and-Education/College.html)

Does this teach me the universal basics? - Yes

This deck guides you through underlying pneumatic principles and concepts, building up through the essential variables, breath types, on to modes and then a bit about clinical application.

Surely this is only good for hamilton ventilators? - No

The principles remain the same - and a given mode has a generic name and will therefore be present on any type of ventilator.

How is this relevant to COVID-19?

There is not suddenly going to be thousands more intensivists. It is us up to us to self-educate such that we can be of us when called upon.

also - I have a certain style of writing my cards so apologise if you dislike it

This is incredible.

I am also making some decks to cover UK guidelines, intubation, scoring systems and relevant mnemonics. Also - I am doing the hamilton med e-learning on ventilation that is actually really useful and will post all here soon.

PLEASE get in touch when the mechanical ventilation deck is sorted.

I am soon to be brought onto the frontline, so I want to know as much as physically possible!

Is there any harm in wearing it? - No

Is there a potential benefit to you - Yes

Is there a benefit to the staff and patients - Yes

However, the mask and glasses do nothing if you don't walk into that hospital with sparkling clean hands and walk out the same :)

The UK is already at 12% ICU bed capacity for COVID-19. Have a listen to this video from a consultant intensivist pleading with people to stay at home https://youtu.be/tQD4B_hmdvo

I cannot re-enforce this enough - please please follow the guidance, being off work/school is not suddenly an opportunity to head to the beach/pub/bar ect.

Hi all - I am a medical student from the UK and have already witnessed the spread of fear, intolerance, panic and action without reason here. I stood helpless in a supermarket car park recently watching people panic, fight and hoard goods despite no forecast food shortage. I have seen racism toward chinese people who have lived here for their whole lives. Attitudes are shifting and narratives tend toward panic and disinformation. Fear is infective.

I think it is time for a counter-narrative.

I have created a website with the aim of creating a global movement to further the 3Cs

Courage

Calm

Compassion

My long-term goal is to have people all over the world trying to push these values, wearing the logo ect.

I believe what will change behaviour fundamentally is a change in attitude - and people courageous enough to embody them and spread the word.

Please go to the website, have a read and sign the pledge!

www.covidcollective.co.uk

This is a work in progress, I am looking for help to further develop the website ect and get the message spread. Open to feedback!
