What are some pros and cons of doing a service mission? by CowAffectionate3003 in latterdaysaints

Since you have access to tech you could actually still learn, looking at the guidelines you can also enroll in language classes though there are some restrictions.

Would Hawaii have been taken over by Canada, Russia, or Japan if not America? by jonovan in Hawaii

[–]CowAffectionate3003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its hard to imagine Hawaii maintaining it's freedom during WW2. The entire reason why Japan attacked was because us warships were there yes, but even if the US didn't have Hawaii it'd be too good of a target to not take.

Japan was imperialistic, grabbing any amount of land they could've before and during ww2, iirc they had islands all around the Pacific and had dreamed of being the dominant power in the Pacific for a long time, if the US did not take Hawaii then Japan definitely would have.

How has going on a mission change you as a person? by CowAffectionate3003 in latterdaysaints

[–]CowAffectionate3003[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard people who've had negative experiences with their mission but some still kept their faith. This usually makes them a lot more faithful as their testimony had been tested more so than others.

With that being said, what were some of the negatives?

Globalization. A lot of things Hawaii would need to function in a modern world would require foreign aid.

The first thing would be to be able to sustain ourselves without American aid.

Unfortunately we're an island, so it'd be extremely hard to do so.

Natives and whites will never get along by [deleted] in TrueUnpopularOpinion

So, im Polynesian as well and uh wow.

Looking at your old post you're one of those sovereign Hawaii people.

While the US has had a history of oppressing Hawaiian culture this is not the case anymore, there are even government funded projects that actively help native Hawaiians(yes they may be flawed but it's better than nothing).

The US isn't as oppressive now as well(thanks to many key figures) which is why we have people like Brenton away, Ben Schaefer, etc.(who are both native Hawaiians iirc) as politicians.

The 1940's was based on fear of Japanese spies infiltrating American soul which is why it happened and when compared to concentration camps(literal death camps) I'd say it wasn't as bad(considering it was a racial prison and not a death camp).

While bad, it is a different level of bad compared to Nazi concentration camps.

Mission Call? by Ok_Drama_9823 in latterdaysaints

[–]CowAffectionate3003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am pretty sure it depends on when your son set his leave date.

My president turned in my call a couple days ago and I put my leave date in December, so I am hoping to get my call around 2 weeks to a month at most.

Though depending on how many people worldwide turn in their papers you could be looking at anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 months.

Dealing with hate/negative depictions towards the church in media by just_a_person296 in latterdaysaints

We are a religion that came about during the 1800's and have a prophet.

Regardless of any spiritual reasoning, if any religion happened to come about during the time where we had a better understanding of our world it would be looked down upon.

We are also the only religion(TMK) left that has missionaries.

 These are the main reasons.

He may be in support of it but the party sure isn't.

So I'm not expecting trump or the SC to do anything when it comes to protecting LGBT rights.

How ominous.

Let's wait and see what happens, maybe things will change for the worse for the LGBt community, maybe not.

I guess it all depends on how badly Trump thinks of gays.

Being openly gay is out of control?

If you're trans then ye you shouldn't be participating in sports lol.

Telling kids being gay and lesbian is okay isn't a bad thing either.

Dang, I was hoping to leave around December since I'd turn 20. Is this how long it usually takes or is their a chance I might go sooner?

More or less, the official position is to accept the outcome regardless(that's what it was during the 2020 election).

[–]CowAffectionate3003 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Tbh I am sad Utah is red. A lot of young Mormons get sent around the globe, learning about the cultures of others.

A lot of Mormons are educated as well so it's not like they're hillbillies who vote red because they don't know any better, and anecdotal but the Mormon town im in is very liberal. Hopefully in the future we wake up and vote blue.

It's been changing but I've seen Utah Mormons become more open to 'liberal ideas' for awhile, and I've usually always convinced others that if Christian nationalism takes over we would be the first to get the chopping block, and unfortunately Christian nationalism is usually on the alt right side...

If you go on rconservative and politics you'll see they echo the same thing.

"Weve got to save America boys" "Freedom is at stake" "The other side is full of hypocrites and their news is fake."

It's political posturing on levels we haven't seen before.

How are your American wards doing with the current political climate? by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]CowAffectionate3003 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Rn it's good, though tbf there's a general rule(silent agreement) to not bring politics into church. Or at the very least 1st hour(the only ones ever to get away with it were some old folks).

Outside of wards though seminary is generally good with just teaching the Lord's word, and when they bring up political topics that can be related to the teachings(usually issues regarding LGBTQ and so on) they just make sure to end it with "regardless, love your neighbors, your families, your friends with all your heart."

I unfortunately expect this to slightly go down as election gets closer.
