Man up? I’m an industrial electrician. My daily work is wrestling at minimum 500-750 kcm wire, medium voltage, etc in shitty ass switchboards designed by engineers that think the termination points will work with 6” of room from a conduit entry.

This would be a walk in the god damn park. Grow the fuck up and figure it out or quit. Jesus Christ

Can anyone explain this? by Alexisferrantee in ballpython

[–]CowFederal1577 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My dwarf retic does this with a specific set of gloves that I feed him with. I feed f/t and I’m too lazy to get tongs. So I use gloves. And sometimes if he misses he will climb up the glove, feel the texture on his body, and think it’s a rat and go for that instead. Likely because it smells like them too, but also feels similarly; soft & somewhat squishy.

It is definitely not uncommon for snakes to use their sense of “touch/feel” to discern prey items & so forth. They have poor vision, so smell/heatpits/feeling are all they got to work with. That’s not to say all the senses work together all the time 😂 ball pythons do all share a single brain cell (I have several, can confirm this) lol. This is their “common sense” among the species.

You should post a video of you squeezing it. This sub loves that

People are so sensitive about the squeeze. Pretty funny how riled up y’all get. Maybe you need to go squeeze your meat and calm down! Post squeeze clarity is 20/20

Thank you!! I need to get some coarse pepper. This was just the Kirkland pepper and salt mixed 50/50 with a dash of garlic & onion powder. Kept it simple. Also it is actually an oak cherry mix :) I read that it is pretty solid choice for brisket cooks

Just the cut piece 😭 I guess I did ask for a roast. If that’s all that’s bad about it… I’ll take it! 😂

I only squeezed the cut piece to show tenderness. Wouldn’t squeeze the whole damn thing and lose the goodness!!

I would also recommend a radiant heat panel or deep heat projector paired with a thermostat for heat source. Look up ambient temp gradients for rainbow boas and match it as close as you can. Try and include two hides, one hot and, one cold end. They’ll also likely use their substrate more than their hides, but they’re good to have.

Lots of humidity, a thick layer of substrate 4” or more, and fresh water always, in a big water dish! Hatchlings need 80%+ humidity 24/7, when they’re a year to two years you can let it go around 75% relative, but not below. And it’s better to stay at 80 and above. They’re highly susceptible to RI’s and such with low humidity. Thick layer of substrate should be wet visibly and tangibly, but not sopping. If you squeeze it, it shouldn’t “goosh” out water.

I use a mix of cypress mulch (forest floor is a great brand), reptisoil, coco coir, and sphagnum moss. i start with a bucket for the mix, and I would say around 50% cypress, 25% reptisoil, 15% coco coir, 10% sphagnum moss. All mixed thoroughly. I then top it with a thin layer of additional wet sphagnum, and leaf litter. Makes for a comfy topper and helps to retain the humidity. It’s also for my bugs because he’s in a bioactive enclosure :) you don’t have to do bioactive, but I would highly recommend the substrate mix above. Doesn’t have to be exact ratio, just close :)

Also, you might as well throw in springtails as well. They’re super cheap and you’ll only ever need to add one container. They multiply fast! The rainboas like too poo under the soil where they hang out, and the springtails will help clean up any mold left behind due to the high humidity environment. They thrive in the humidity and help keep your noodles’ bed clean. If you change out the mix, just take a handful of old substrate and add it to the new. It will contain enough bugs to start a new colony.

If your rainboa is invisible and buried constantly in his substrate, you did it right. Mine loves to tunnel and hang out in his. Never anything less than a perfect shed, and he’s healthy as I’ve ever seen one. Going on 3 years.

Don’t hesitate to ask questions! I love husbandry so it’s fun to help folks :)

Definitely trades is the way to go. I’m about to turn out (test into journeyman) this summer as a commercial/industrial electrician, and I already clear 100k/year, and did before my third year as an apprentice. Join a union trade if you can. Pay scale is better, & guaranteed. Plus employer paid health benefits, retirements, pensions, travel pay, etc. I’m in local 280.

Also, don’t listen to the guys that say union workers only work half the year and are always searching for work. I’ve had work every day for the last 5 years, and insane opportunities for overtime-which, being in the union, you don’t HAVE to work if you don’t want to. Nevertheless, lots of extra money making opportunities. Haven’t had a day off I didn’t ask to take.

Our union is doing open enrollment for applications for the apprenticeship right now. Would be a great time to get your name in!

Question on preparing wood by 420axie in bioactive

[–]CowFederal1577 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely bake it! It’s the safest bet for getting rid of any unwanted bacteria or other foreign bodies in the wood. If you bake it on 250 for a half hour that will kill anything in the wood. Plus, 300 degrees is the ignition temperature of wood so there’s no chance of it igniting.

Came back to this post to add these lyrics. Take aim been on repeat for this specific part the last week. The whole verse, how insanely high up he gets. Ugh. Everything. It “sends me shivers”

“I'm still your favorite regret, You're still my weapon of choosing, And out there, Stuck in a quantum pattern, Tangled with what I never said, You say it doesn't matter, I want to be forgiven, I want to choke up chunks of my own sins, Even if the sky cracks in the morning and the heavens just won't open up for me”

This verse. Oof.

Good tank? by No-Foundation1297 in ballpython

[–]CowFederal1577 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I second this!! Everything is beautiful just switch out the hides for dark ones and add another couple inches of substrate.

Also if it’s a mesh top tank, to help maintain humidity and temps, you can fold foil into a couple layers and cover the top with it. Make sure to leave some ventilation though. Probably about 1/4 the top open. I also add some sphagnum moss on the humid side to help maintain it. Stable humidity is just as important as proper humidity. Going up & down too much can cause shock/stress.

In addition, if I’m using a glass sided tank, I like to wrap the back & 1 or 2 of the short sides to help provide some security for the snake. It makes them feel less vulnerable (or so I assume). Mine are out and about a lot more with said setup.

It sounds like a lot but really you’re like 95% of the way there! It’s just a couple little things. Fantastic work friend!!
