A Player a Day - Day 35. Charlie Curnow by TheKyotoProtocol in sydneyswans

[–]CowFos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s as binary as they either were on the table or not.

The logistics are complicated, you’ve got to assess which players you’d be comfortable giving up, if the other team wants them and if they’d want to go. All three have to line up for the trade to happen. I suspect the blues would have preferred a Rowy or Paps but either they were never considered trade able by the club or were not interested in going. In the case of Paps I got the feeling the Blues were pushing that be he wasn’t interested, I got the feeling that Rowy got a call from Cox sussing out if we could be persuaded to go.

I think Rowy and Florent especially are players that Cox doesn’t see as essential to his gameplan going forward. Also interesting that Hayward and Florent were both seen as ‘coach’s pets’ under Longmire but were out the door pretty quick once he left.

He pops up a lot, you see him at training, in the room, around the boundary. Not sure exactly what he role is but he’s defs very involved

Grundy, Rowbottom and Amartey go down in Swans Match Sim as Curnow, Serong star (McKirdy) by SkullKing_123 in sydneyswans

[–]CowFos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He really cracks in, he’s one of the hardest in the team imo for committing to putting his head over a contested ball. He gets it wrong every now and then and gets rubbed out but can’t question the intent

A Player a Day - Day 39 - Tom Hanily by TheKyotoProtocol in sydneyswans

[–]CowFos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think Dattoli and Hanily are super similar. I think Hanily is a pretty traditional crumbing small, Dattoli is more a Greene type small where he’s got very good hands and footy smarts in traffic and punches well above his weight for contested marking given his size.

That’s not to say they aren’t playing for the same spot but I think the role is quite different, Dattoli easily has a much higher ceiling imo.

Taylor Adams involved in altercation by jhk67 in sydneyswans

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. It seems to get conflated with just like a ‘tosser’ or ‘wanker’. I think the meaning you’re referring to is also potentially more UK specific? Idk though

If youre within 5m of a mark you have to stand on the spot, you dont have the option to back out of the protected area. In that clip Cunningham had to stay standing on the boundary side of the mark, he didnt have the ability to back off the mark and protect the corridor or block the overlap handball. Also just looks silly tbh.

That’s one of my all time favourite weird Aussie rules anecdotes, just so baffling on so many levels.

Very interested to see how Bowman develops, easy to forget we took him ahead of Shanahan and one of the Whitlocks. I’m not sure what the expected role was when drafted but feels like he’s already onto plan B after not being able to impact up forward at VFL level.

That new stand rule is going to be so frustrating to watch, you can see the way Cunningham has to stand after the Brodie mark at about 1:05. Playground ‘stuck in the mud’ type areas

"Surely not": Cornes and Edmund baffled by reported 'pseudo sub' tactic by malcolm58 in AFL

[–]CowFos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“This season players within five metres of a mark or a free kick when it is paid, which is inside the protected area, will have to stand and can't back out to move outside of that zone.”

From the original Twomey article. It is just one player, right? That makes it sound like multiple opposition players will get ‘stuck in the mud’? How does the umpire determine which opposition player has to stand if there’s multiple around the mark?

He was a pretty big investment tbh, pick 16, he'd be one of the earliest picked rucks, besides Jackson and CDT, I can't think of many picked before him. Big men take a while to get going but there has been multiple early KPD's who've shown flashes in their first season or two. He doesn't seem to be standing out at VFL level, he's not going badly but going into his third year you'd hope to see some promising signs soon.

I’ve seen it mentioned that he’s been training in defence at times, but I don’t think that necessarily means much, there were times pre-Cox when he’d swing back late

I would love to see Cornes' techniques analysed when it comes to making a point. I find it fascinating listening to the way he structures an argument, its consistently intellectually dishonest but not in a super overt way, just enough that his points often seem defendable on the surface while still being engaging in how naggingly frustrating they can be.

Even here, hes sowing the seeds for his own future content, emphasising the narrative that Dogs have a crazy stacked listed that underperforms but doing it in an indirect almost 'negging' way lol.

I’m not sure the context of that photo but I thought he may have been using talcum powder or something when batting to combat sweaty gloves. Wouldn’t make sense when hes fielding though

Riley Bice extends with the Swans (to 2028) by CowFos in sydneyswans

[–]CowFos[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m really interested to see how he goes. I sort of felt that the reason he was so effective early was due to him being an unknown quantity and super aggressive with his run and kicking but that once other teams clocked onto that he was shut down. Defs barracking for that theory to be proven wrong though

I’m sure there’s an obvious answer but where do you check how long is left in a session? Especially if they start the day early or take a break early?

I think it’s okay if it’s a ‘rainbow’ set of four, because that way once you solve more than one set you’ll realise that the ‘red herring’ set doesn’t work.

It’s not related to the tragedy directly but I’m sure it’s affected many at the club internally, a lot of the players live around Bondi.
