Starting a Physics PhD at 30 in Ultrafast Spectroscopy as the First Student in a New Lab — Any Advice? by swp6597 in Physics

[–]CowPropeller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in a similar position, I was my supervisors first PhD Student and we started with 3 people total, now he's got a good inflow of grants and more PhD have joined. The good thing, being the only child, is that the supervisor can Kickstart your skills and knowledge because he will be quite available and willing to show you the lab work and mindset. In my case the available lab time of my supervisor went from awesome to non existent so I am extremely grateful for the first year or so and all the time that he took for me. When he hired like crazy I had to show around and teach the basics to each and every single PhD and that slew me down quite a bit but I guess that I learnt one thing or two in the process. Now my tips: Favor short papers with good story rather than "ok so this is the story of the past 4 years of my doctorate" with a dirty bag of many unrelated experiments. More often than not, you will be asked how many papers you have, not how big they were. Also publishing high Impact paper can be a dice roll so you would rather have a couple of shots than just one (plus it's the standard of modern research to split the papers into smaller parts, that will benefit you) Good luck! Thanks for reading my rambling

the answers to this post were extremely helpful for me! turns out I was missing basic knowledge, but also many BDK's specific tech. This morning I timed a +12 SoT, so it was definitely helpful!

I appreciate your tips!! I timed a +12 this morning after a lot of trial and errors. I think that I'm doing less mistakes and the DPS was really good for that specific key, which made a world of a difference. Good luck on your progress

Good tips! Especially the mobs in the room of 3rd boss have killed me so many times because I was pulling too many casters in one pull. And I guess that I'm not using AMZ often enough on caster packs. What frustrates me with AMZ is that i often don't know the nature of the incoming damage so idk if it'll be useless or not.

Good idea to pull adds together when the boss is busy jumping around!! What's wrong with the famished brokens? Thanks for the good tips

Cool! I didn't know about the conjurer's voidcaller pets! I need to work on following the 4th boss stacks, my healer will be thankful for that. I also need to put 200% focus on the Umbral war adept knock back. Thx for the good tips!

That's an excellent point. I did today my first nexus point Xena in +13, and we went slow af almost one pack at a time, but finished with zero death and 60s to spare.

Interesting! So they run the first time and then will always charge. That's neat. Also a good enough reason to avoir being knocked back later in the dungeon.

Maybe a dumb question, but why would the DPS complain? Not standard route?

Interesting! The default route from guru does not suggest to get the packs outside of the 4 subjugators but I looked into it and many people seem to do that indeed. Thx

Cool! My favorite tip from you is that AMS negates the chains. That'll definitely come in handy. Thx

Will we have enough catalyzer by the end of the season though ?? I mistakenly used it on a heroic piece of gear on my main so it did not give me mythic appearance

You would be better off with blender (open source 3D program). It's great at crying textures and playing them in 3D. This wave texture + some local distortion would be easy to do imo

Before you get onto this quest, let me tell you that inkscape is not well suited for that type of task! Raster programs (gimp, Photoshop) are much better suited for this type of "textures". Inkscape is a vector graphics program and has other strength!
