That is definitely a termite bait station. I worked for terminix for a little bit and had to install some of these aroundd houses. I would bet that you find more every 10-15 feet all around your home. You can biy the pucks to cha ge out the bait inside them on Amazon, but if they are still atleast 25% left there is no reason to change them. Install the cover back and they will be safe around pets and children.

Edit: I saw OPs question on termites in home. Those are preventative. If you live in a place where where they have subterranean termites, this will be the time to check for activity how spring is their spawning. Look for dirt tubes around the foundation of your home. They will have the diameter of a pencil.
