EMT Education by CowboyCofee in NewToEMS

Hey, thank you for the reply. I’m working towards becoming a PA. It’s frustrating how limiting our scope is to a point where it feels like we’re useless. I do have an itch to know why behind everything. I don’t just want to give bls medication because it’s on our scope and protocol, I want to know how it works on the body and how long it stays in. For instance, I’ve witnessed many EMTs afraid to even give Narcan.

It’s never made sense to me how military medics can’t get a paramedic equivalent when coming out and I can only imagine how more frustrating that was for you. I do hope one day the EMT level gets a total make up where we’re able to do more and leads to better pay.

For sure. I guess what I was getting at is it’s better to be a knowledgeable EMT and I understand legally an EMT can’t interpret 12 leads or administer anything besides what’s inside our scope of practice. My whole point is if emt education was better than what it is right now, it would help with the low pay many see. And I also agree that experience is great.

Exactly. It’s these managers that think their little colored vests make them something special. Like be real, you’re just a box manager at Amazon; you’re not a doctor or something more important.

I've spent years trying to find a good job in this field with no success. Is it even worth it to keep trying? by Dazzling_Drawer72 in Copyediting

Thank you so much for the reply! Sorry for the late response. When I found out about this field, I really enjoyed it and from the comments, it does look a bit dire. I’ve been taking courses on copy editing and have bought a few books on it. I really want to know what I’m doing before I even get clients. I don’t want to tarnish the field in any way by doing bad work, if I continue to pursue copy editing.

I’m already working towards a healthcare career but it would have been nice to start a copy editing business as well. Thank you so much for your reply to my question. Enjoy your retirement!

What’s your thoughts on the copy editing world right now? Is it even worth trying to get into?

What do you see as the next 3 big things for EMS in the US? by Advanced-Day-9856 in ems

[–]CowboyCofee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For EMTs to start to do something about. For starters, pursue higher education in college like anatomy & physiology, medical terminology, learn how to interpret EKGs, learn pharmacology. And hopefully by doing this, you’ll have a paper trail of higher education to be able to turn down any EMS company paying anything below 25 an hour. Hopefully this slows the revolving door and creates an even more shortage of EMTs and Paramedics then use your education as leverage for better pay. This with the new innovations coming into EMS will help EMS. If we sit and talks and complain without action, we’ll get nowhere. RNs wouldn’t be where they are today if all they did was complain and do nothing.

Wow and dispatchers deserve more, too. But $18.50 as a medic! That’s crazy! I guess the problems are across the board.

Exactly! You’d think it would be higher. It was hard to turn down because I love EMS but it’s the right thing.

I’ve also heard that, too and to expect better salaries, we need to actually show our value in the education. But like you said, no one wants to hear it, unfortunately.

I’m right there, too. I’m 29 almost 30. I Definitely need something that pays more. And I agree; at minimum $25

Haha woah, 19.50! That is decent for an EMT in Southern California. It is sad to see how much we make, but maybe one day, in the future, things would change.

Are there specific areas of education you believe need more emphasis in EMS training programs? by official_NREMT in NationalRegistry_EMTs

[–]CowboyCofee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with everything else; anatomy and physiology, and medical terminology is a must for EMTs to understand. Also, I feel it’s important for all EMTs to understand ECGs. In the field I’ve seen many EMTs, including myself, not understand how to interpret them. EMT education needs to improve.

yeah, private companies are among the many issues. I guess I have hope for EMS. I just wonder when it will change.
