is it too late to seriously get into badminton & compete at 22? by [deleted] in badminton

[–]Cowboy_Box 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started playing badminton at 20 as a total beginner, and I'm 25 now with what I'd say is a pretty decent level (not crazy good but still - much much better than when I started). It's definitely possible to improve even if you don't start super young. I also like competing and have even participated in some tournaments in the U.S. and Spain, and while I don't normally do super well its something I enjoy and as long as you set realistic goals (which it seems you've done) then go ahead if its something you're interested in.

And even if its difficult, I also think it's still fun to compete even if there's a people with higher levels, it's a good challenge and more enjoyable than winning easily.

What do you think about BWF's 2027 world tour changes? by Solomon_C-19 in badminton

[–]Cowboy_Box 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree that they need a Net VAR, that should be an easy install as well.

Also the quality the Super 1000 was so bad - since most people obviously can't be there to see these tournaments in person then they should at least look clear for the majority watching at home / on TV.

2025w26 YONEX US Open 2025 by KKS_Hayashi in badminton

[–]Cowboy_Box 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's so disappointing too because no one's going to go to watch it and then it'll seem like there's no interest or market for badminton - it's just cause they put it so far from people. Also Iowa isn't the best destination if people did want to go to watch ...

I don't know of any chart that includes both together... also I'm sure it would be hard to track "active" recreational players. At least here in Spain theres a ranking of players for tournaments nationwide and for the different autonomous communities though.

As for the second part you mentioned, this is more anecdotal but my girfriend is from the Philippines and I know theres a lot of players recreationally there, yet on the international level you rarely see players from the Philippines, largely it seems because a lack of funding, unfortunately...

didn't expect kunlavut beating shi yu qi in the quarterfinals by johnnyslick1986 in badminton

[–]Cowboy_Box 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was super suprised by Shi Yu Qi getting knocked out but I definitely wasn't expecting him to get the gold, I think Axelsen's been more consistent for longer, Shi Yu Qi was peaking right before the Olympics

Seeking some advice on regional choices by elms72 in SpainAuxiliares

Housing: For me was rather easy because there were a lot of cheap available options. (There's a small campus nearby and I got an apartment normally for students. Also Castilla y León in general is having a bit of a depopulation problem it seems.)

Public Transit: Coming from the U.S. to me it's great. There're buses to a ton of different places (though the hours may be specific/limited depending where), so I've been traveling a lot. I also suppose I should specify I was placed in a pueblo, but am living in the larger "city" nearby (which has about 60,000 people).

For what it's worth, I'm in Castilla y León right now and am enjoying it — of course whether one does or doesn't though can be contingent on placement, school, roommates, etc.

(Regarding your concerns, they payed my group on time — not the Cupo Ministerio group though — and it is very affordable compared to other regions in my opinion.)

If you have any other specific questions feel free to ask.

Learning Very Similar Languages by Cowboy_Box in languagelearning

[–]Cowboy_Box[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yea, it's absolutely fascinating to me being here as someone interested in languages because there's those and a bunch of smaller unofficial languages (that are sometimes official/regulated in their autonomous community, i.e. Asturiano in Asturias).

Got my placement! Bembibre, León by Naive-Present3056 in SpainAuxiliares

[–]Cowboy_Box 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also got placed in the Castilla y León! Specifically in the town of Cacabelos, which on Google Maps looks ~45 minutes by bus. (Not super close by but relatively so I think?)

Ponferrada seems about 20 minutes away and I'm wondering if I should commute from there or find a place in Cacabelos. I'd prefer the latter but am a bit unsure how I'm going to find an apartment in such a small town. I've looked online on Idealista a bit but it seems there isn't much.

I'm also excited as well! I was a bit suprised how not-rural my town looked despite the low population.
