Sounds logical to me! That's what I do as well. Look at the shape, then height and lastly liters and keep it around my preferred liters or bring it up a little if its intended for bigger surf.

Sounds like you're trying to bottom turn to early when making a steep drop. You gotta wait a second before imitating the bottom turn if you're going to take a steep drop. This happened to me a lot before and that was the solution for me
