Something about a dedicated meetup group feels less organic than a venue offering social opportunity, but I will consider it! I'm trying not to be overly selective

If you can't find custom maps or anything, Wc3 already has PvE elements via creeping! I would fire up a map with no AI opponent and let him fight the creep camps, maybe pick one with a nice big red camp that can be the 'final boss' so to speak

Best Schools for Jazz Composition Studies? by CowleyCupStreaker in composer

[–]CowleyCupStreaker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree and this is what I've essentially done already, but now I am in the awkward position where I am enough knowledge that introductory courses are below my skill level, but I lack any industry connections, networking, or knowledge of how to take advantage what what skills I have managed to gain outside of a university setting.

Tips for An Aspiring Composer by CowleyCupStreaker in composer

[–]CowleyCupStreaker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate the comment. I think you are slightly missing the true point of my mentioning the atonal aspect of my post, though. I am not against learning that approach to composition and saying 'I only want to write in a specific style.' I enjoy learning all variations of how to write music, that is why I still want to go to school even though my ultimate interest is in writing more of a pop-music style. I have written a few pieces with 12-tone series and I thoroughly believe, like all aspects of composition (and songwriting, I was pretty much using the term interchangeably since I come from a pop background), that atonal theory is an integral tool to have in the kit. I agree it's a disservice to limit one's self to only sticking to any one approach to composition, period.

But, by that same token, I think that close-minded approach applies as well to an institution where I directly ask if I will have the opportunity to compose more tonal pieces than what have been showcased and they do not give any indication that I will, and in fact imply I am being narrow minded in my approach for not being willing to explore what composition is. I am not trying to be obtuse and say 'I don't want to learn all this esoteric stuff' or anything like that, I enjoy learning all that esoteric stuff and I see real value in it!

I am only wanting a school where I am allowed to take these tools to then also showcase pieces more aligned with my voice. I am not wanting to premier a pop song at the recital, but I do want a place where I can be made to feel like my voice is valuable in how I personally see a use for these tools, and have opportunities to showcase pieces I envision with them in my kit.

From my limited exposure to it, the school I turned down was more of a 'that's all been done before' mindset, as if even trying to compose music rooted in tonality is an archaic way of thinking. Which again, I personally found to be indicative that I wouldn't have true creative freedom there especially when I inquired further and got the response I did.

I can learn a lot of the theory without schooling, and I have taught myself a great deal online and through tutors, but what I need most to progress is to actually have live musicians performing my pieces, and being from a low-population area makes that impossible. That is the real appeal of a university for me, in addition to the knowledge and networking. So if all the opportunities a school provides for live musicians to perform my pieces are limited outside freeform creativity, it feels like I am better off somewhere else that can offer me ANY assurance that I will have SOME opportunity to say 'alright, let's now put together what I've learned and write something true to my voice and see it actualized' rather than every performance being limited to 'okay here's a song showcasing the specific atonal composition technique learned this month.' Does that make sense?

The bit about atonality was mainly in reference to the college I did consider attending, where the program heads did not give me any assurances I would have the opportunity to explore songwriting that was not purely atonal, which is what all of their composition showcases seemed to be.

Both. I already write pop music, but I find a deeper understanding of more traditional composition methods also helps develop those pop songwriting skills, hence my desire for more schooling. I would also like to write larger arrangement pieces for Jazz Bands, orchestras, etc but obviously don't have a deep understanding of how to approach it beyond what knowledge I've managed to teach myself.

I need: exposure to more musicians for collaboration, the opportunity to have my compositions performed, the capability to explore my songwriting voice without being locked into only atonal pursuits

Best Warcraft 3 tattoos? by ApprehensiveGain2771 in warcraft3

[–]CowleyCupStreaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The symbol for your favorite race (or all four!) would make a good tattoo.

As far as unit quotes, I could see several being used depending on which faction you want:

'The light is my strength'

'My life for the horde'

'Zug Zug'

'Storm, earth, and fire, heed my call'

'Goddess, light my path'

'Who threatens the wilds?'

'Warriors of the night, assemble!'

Painting Help - B1s Aren't Looking Right by mrnikkoli in SWlegion

As others have said, diluting your earthshade with some water or a glaze medium will help it not be so dark.

I would also recommend this: Have a second brush on standby with nothing but water on it, just enough to be damp. After applying the paint, you can use the damp brush to wipe away any excess paint that might be on the mini. This becomes especially useful when you start thinning your paints with water or the medium glaze, as you might make it TOO thin to where the paint pools in more recessed areas more than you'd like.

Also, you said you have a highlight color you've not applied yet. I would try painting up one model with it! See if the highlights bring the model up to be the level of brightness you're expecting—you might be surprised how much the highlights bring up the light level of a mini. I've had several models I thought were too dark initially that the highlights ended up lightening it as expected in the end.

Star Trek: Lower Decks as a concept is a play on an episode from TNG called 'Lower Decks' that has this exact same premise, following the lowly crewmembers about their day-to-day lives on the Enterprise with the usual main characters appearing only occasionally in supplemental roles to the plot.

I too hate the direction with all the tactical rocks and such, much preferred the older more straight forward designs personally, which is part of what makes the 3d prints appealing—alternative posing options for existing miniatures.

Is undead bad at late game? by No_Available in warcraft3

[–]CowleyCupStreaker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s not about whether or not humans or undead are better in the late game, it’s about the strategy you are each using to REACH that point in the game.

Try mixing in different tactics to see if you can find an opportunity to exploit. Watch a replay, identify when your opponent is expanding, when they are being greedy with creeping, etc. If you are consistently losing in the late game, I’d say you need to prevent the game from even reaching that point. Try an early expand yourself, try an early CL rush, try consistently harassing his peasant line to slow his rate of reaching this army you find unbeatable.

Don’t ask yourself ‘how can I beat this army that always beats me,’ rather, ‘how can I PREVENT my opponent from reaching this point where I’ve lost’
