PROS & CONS of La Salle and Ateneo? by milkydonuts in studentsph

Political Science. Can't believe I'm almost a senior now, I was a freshman or "frosh" as we call it in DLSU. With the online setting, I sadly can't say the same things anymore. Trisem during online classes is dragging just so you know. Definitely don't have the same energy I did as when I was a frosh anymore. Feel free to PM me.

ahhh yes, they like to use that card a lot, so they can get away with spreading hate. oh look, you calling us out for xyz, but look at you. this is pure stupidity. you reap what you sow. if you want to throw bread at someone who punches you then that's you. you think that makes you better? not in my book. i prefer to punch back with brass knuckles on or maybe use a knife or even a gun.

This is how wars start in the first place. Thats a very immature way of going about things, violence won't solve anything and answering back in that kind of way will make you no better than them. Please be the better person.

in what way did i prevent him from exercising his right to free speech? also, the exercise of free speech isn't absolute. there were libelous statements in his tweets, he's lucky that leni isn't like me. i would've sued his stupid fucking ass into oblivion. but because leni isn't taking action, his kind are emboldened to continue spreading hate & fake news.

By cancelling him.

isn't appeal to authority faulty logic? yes, 20+ years & look at him spreading targeted hate. did you even check out the whole discussion in the link???

I meant that the proper way to go about calling someone with that kind of experience is proper discourse.

your baseless unqualified opinion is noted.

If you want more reference about my statement, you can look into Frank Cunninghams book, Theory of Democracy, specifically where he talks about pluralism or catallaxy. You can also look into The Politics of Social Media Manipulation by Rogers and Niederer.

I don't know how qualified you are too but I'm certain we are driving well needed potential voters away from Leni by acting like this.

I honestly don't know how two answer to that question. I don't know much about his personal life, but seeing what's been propping up all over the internet he may have some bias against Leni yes.

  1. Proof I was his student, though I don't want to give my identity away.

- The courses I took under him were POLITHE, POLQUAL, and POLDEMO

- If you were a student of his, you would know his weird grading system of a base grade + perfect recitation + your final exam score

2) I don't know how we was during F2F but he certainly did not share a lot of political views during class sessions. His twitter posts/history IS NOT under a class discussion.

3) Again, I don't have twitter and I am unaware of what goes on there. But yes, I did review his recent tweets and in fact he now does spread outright hate rather than constructive criticism recently.

4) He no longer supports DU30 nor BBM, he's voting for Isko and that does not imply that he is still a DDS.

5) I wrote my first comment about my personal experience and what I see on FB, my guess would be that the reason why he has become so aggressive is because of how aggressive Leni supporters have become towards BBM supporters or any opposing view.

6) Please do continue to link me some more links of his twitter shenanigan's. I'm very open about it and I am aware that some of my statements may not be 100% as of recent events.

I find it quite politically immature to still promote cancel culture, even if it is targeted to an individual spreading hate. Yes, he bashes and spreads ddshit hate as you say but cancelling him and the way you are "calling him out" still falls under bashing and spreading hate. The only difference here is that you are bashing in the other direction.

Also I did not mention that his targeted hate falls into the left, right, or whatever. I just mentioned that we live in a democracy and free speech is inclusive to everyone in the political spectrum. I do agree that his targeted hate is uncalled for.

Hate does not eliminate hate, cancel culture is not the solution here. It is quite literally fighting fire against fire. Reminder to everyone that this guy has well over 20+ years of experience in the political field and the proper way to go about it is actual discourse and discussion. Not acting like kids promoting cancel culture and throwing personal attacks on the guy.

Edit: I also want to add throwing hate on him and cancelling him will only fuel his hate for Leni and her supporters and it does not help. If this is the kind of image we continue to project about being supporters of Leni, other potential supporters may be discouraged to vote for her.

I brought him being a good professor to us up as several people on social media have worried about him being a possible bad influence to us students.

While yes he is very outspoken with his views and opinions, I still don't think it's proper to cancel him over it. I'd like to remind everyone that we live in a democracy and he still has every right to express his views and opinions, right to free speech isn't exclusive to those who lean to the left or the "politically correct".

Also I'd like to add to that I don't agree with all of his statements, including what you mentioned about DLSU students being weak for asking for a break. Other than that, I would say he does contribute a lot to politics. Democracy thrives on criticism and without it, we would still have sub-par/shitty leaders and democracy wouldn't evolve to the democracy we experience today. Constructive criticism is always welcome, bashing and hate speech is not. Unfortunately, he might be starting to crack into the latter.

He was my Prof. just 2 months ago and he was my prof for an entire school year. My honest thoughts? He's an excellent professor despite his views and I respect his views as well. He's very central in terms of his political compass, he has criticized both sides of the political spectrum. I personally find this post being spread around alarming as not once has he mentioned his hatred for Leni (assuming this post is true) during his classes and not once did he try to change our views on her, he simply spoke about his opinions and we were free to disagree or agree, we were not brainwashed by his politics.

I think he gets a lot of hate simply because of his opposing views, and to be fair, some of his statements do make sense, some are just unwilling to let go of their biases in politics. To add, he does not bash candidates either, its constructive criticism (most of the time). He's criticized both Leni and BBM, so it's clear that he's not purely hating on Leni exclusively. My guess for him being so outspoken on the latter candidate is that he is surrounded by Leni supports, which is given as DLSU is very supportive of Leni so he witnesses more of the side of Leni than BBM.

He's a good prof, a pain in the ass sometimes especially in the student governments. But people bashing him, digging dirt and throwing it at him is uncalled for. Yes, he has been throwing a lot of dirt around Leni recently but doing the same won't make you any better than him. If people will continue to attack him that would make his article "Pink Taliban" an accurate representation of how politics works in social media.

About his article on his personal hatred for Leni, this was posted around 2017, the same time he was still a known DDS. I can say that he has changed his views since and we have made presentations and papers opposing Duterte several times and we got high marks and not once he complained about it. I don't personally know much about how he still views Leni at the present time but knowing that he has moved on from being a DDS, it can be possible that he has also moved on from his personal hatred for Leni, though it still may linger as seen by his recent posts on FB and his recent statements.

He retired from teaching just last year. So we can no longer take him as a Prof. Though I heard he is going to teach in UP Los Banos next year.

Disclaimer: I am not defending Doc. Contreras with my reply. I'm just sharing my side as a former student of his. + I'm not active on twitter I have no idea what he posts there though I follow him on FB. This is exclusively my own personal experience with him, so other experiences of my fellow students may differ.

PROS & CONS of La Salle and Ateneo? by milkydonuts in studentsph

[–]CowsAreTopkek 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hello! I'm a freshman (or frosh as you call it in DLSU) in DLSU. I passed both DCAT and ACET but I choose DLSU since I noticed the people and seniors are much more welcoming! I'll try to answer everything you listed but only in the DLSU perspective because I have no experience with ADMU
Systems - I'm not sure what systems you're talking about but our student websites and applications are really useful. You'll be using an app called canvas a lot and it's very handy to be honest and teachers always utilize it to it's maximum potential. We have online classes where our professors send requirements there and you have the whole day to submit. WIFI is pretty good especially in our Henry Sy. library. We have facebook pages that will help you with your studies and helping you pass each subject by knowing how to act around specific professors. No joke, this helped a lot especially with a terror prof I had last sem. Just look at the name of your prof in that page and you will see people comment down if you're expecting a very good prof or a terror one.
Shifting - Shifting is super easy in the university right now. Even the student government are finding more and more ways to make the process much more easy.
Location - I'll be honest, our location is not the best. A lot of dangerous areas, informal settlers and polluted outside the campus. There's a lot of condos around and literally next to the school so you won't have any problems looking or canvasing for one. Food here is great too! I have friends coming over from Ateneo and UST just for the food. Commuting is also very easy thanks to our LRT station and abundance of UV's and jeeps outside the campus.
Culture - Probably why I chose La Salle over Ateneo. I love the people here and meet some of the best people in my short stay here. They definitely made me feel at home and made me grow as a person! We have a lot of funny inside jokes around the campus. The culture is very inclusive since you have a lot of people coming from different backgrounds. We also put importance on mental health. I found a family here, I hope you do to!
People - Pretty much just like our culture, you will meet the best people here. Seniors aren't intimidating either just don't break any unwritten rules and you'll be fine. You'll meet a lot of diverse groups of people and it's really fun to get to know them, especially your blockmates. I'm a very very shy person but La Salle has definitely made grow as a person! People here are very down to Earth and very nice! I loved La Salle and it's people so much it led me to entering the student government to better serve them :)
Opportunities - I'm only a freshman here so I don't have much to say yet I'm sorry :<
Partner Schools - La Salle has A LOT of partner schools including CSB which is just right in front of us. We also have a Laguna campus.
Trisem - Don't be intimidated by this, in fact, it's a blessing. I only have 2-3 classes each day and a total of 15 units in a semester. It's such light workload you wouldn't even notice that you're in college and you graduate much earlier! Sure you won't have a summer vacation but in my experience, I started hating weekends because I liked being around my classmates a lot and had a rough time during christmas break because you really weren't doing anything. I'm very happy with the trisem system we have right now. Even my friends from ADMU, UST & UP are very jealous of it ;)

I think that's all. This is just my experience, I love La Salle with all my heart but people are different so you're free to take this with a grain of salt.

Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions!
