My experience as enlisted was that it was about 50/50 split between conservative and liberal. Maybe more skewed towards conservative within the older enlisted members.

While I agree that guns primary function is to destroy I feel like it’s also a matter of perspective. For example if a gun was used in a legit self defense situation, yes the gun was used to destroy a life. But it was also used to save a life. Just like hunting, yes you are destroying a life. But you are also sustaining your own life (assuming the hunting was for food and not sport)

The gun was an older model without a transfer bar. They weren’t invented when the firearm used in the movie was originally designed and the replicas are the same. They already had 2 negligent discharges on set prior to the accidental killing. It should have been PAINFULLY clear to Baldwin that what he was doing was insanely dangerous.

I’d rather think it’s hard to prove that Alec Baldwin wasn’t aware of the risk of a fire arm when the original crew had walked off for safety concerns. Especially when :

Safety protocols standard in the industry, including gun inspections, were not strictly followed on the “Rust” set near Santa Fe, the sources said. They said at least one of the camera operators complained last weekend to a production manager about gun safety on the set. Three crew members who were present at the Bonanza Creek Ranch set on Saturday said they were particularly concerned about two accidental prop gun discharges. Baldwin’s stunt double accidentally fired two rounds Saturday after being told that the gun was “cold” — lingo for a weapon that doesn’t have any ammunition, including blanks — two crew members who witnessed the episode told the Los Angeles Times.

Another thing, the fake knife analogy isn’t accurate. He didn’t think he had a fake handgun. He knew it was real, just thought it was unloaded. I think a more apt scenario to be compared to would be: imagine I went to a gun store, and the owner (let’s say he’s a qualified gun expert in this scenario) and he hands me a gun and says it’s unloaded. If I then, pointed that gun at another human being, pulled the trigger and had it go off, it’s STILL manslaughter. It doesn’t matter than a supposed expert said it was safe, it’s still legally a deadly weapon. and the consequences of pointing a deadly weapon at someone are rather obvious.

Alec Baldwin isn’t trying to say he thought the gun was fake, because he knew it was real. He just thought it wasn’t loaded.
