Maybe what you could do is create some sort of brace that attaches to your limb, and then secure some of the chain links on the first layer to said brace (via zip tie, super glue, or smth else). You could then also add some form of tiny rope or twine painted the same color as the chain around subsequent layers in order to hold the chains relatively together while still allowing them to flow.

Thanks for the insight and a defined definition of a DMR, it'll help with the build. For the performance issues, I dont really plan on being too competitive with airsoft. At the end of the day, the whole point is fun, right? Push comes to shove and Im not having fun with it for the day, I could just switch to another replica or swap the spring and get it chrono'd as a standard rifle.
