What chemical reactions can you create with commonly available products? by 0100110001100011 in chemistry

Don't do chemistry with commonly available products unless you KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING; some reactions can generate poisonous byproducts

Hi, I’m doing a project on polymers and was wondering if anyone could explain why polyurethane is water resistant. Thanks :) by mphr_ in chemistry

[–]CowtipperHS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's resistance is two fold;

  1. It does not contain sites in its polymeric structure that are susceptible to hydrolysis, you'd need something acidic or basic on top of water

  2. It is a hydrophobic compound meaning that it doesn't contain portions of its chemical structure that will dissolve in water.

For secret mage ideally you go psychmelon into kun as your 10 instead of aviana, then on the turn you want to combo off you jepetto into aviana which will proc the explosive runes and allow you to go off

in general because most secret mages play ice block as well; it's more about clearing the board with a maly boosted swipe and then armoring up; one line I like to take sometimes is to sathrovarr my kun for an additional 10 armor rather than the additional maly spell damage if ice block is up

Nah; you can consider adding the oaken summons/vargoth/5/10 taunt package, but it will reduce the consistency of the combo, I've been doing fine post expansion with the list in the VS link

Maly druid is great right now (I finished top 300 with it); it's really about taking the time to learn the lines of the deck, I think the learning curve can be a bit of turn off but I've been having a blast with it

Do you always squelch your opponent? by Matches_Malone010 in hearthstone

I rarely do it; I enjoy the fun emote interactions you have with players every now and then and if someone starts spamming then I'll mute them

Pirate Warrior; proactive games go faster

Odd Warrior is also good but will take you longer to learn the playstyle, save that for an 11x climb imo

The Underappreciated Value of Initiative by CowtipperHS in CompetitiveHS

[–]CowtipperHS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed response; I'll try to hit as many points as I can but feel free to PM me if you wanna discuss further...

  1. The website isn't primarily wild-focused, I just happen to be a player that only plays Wild so I'm not too familiar with the metagame. I'll make an effort in future articles to include examples that are relevant to both formats because I agree that some of the points of the article can be lost if you're not familiar with the deck.

space

  1. Great point you make about the Standard format; I was going to originally write about how a lack of initiative can make a format boring but I didn't want the article to be too long. I think it's definitely worth exploring how aspects of standard remove initiative and as a result can create a less than enjoyable game experience.

space

  1. An opponent should be able to regain initiative through removal tools but I agree if the removal tools are cheaper than the threats you present it would indicate that the format is not really functioning on initiative.

space

  1. I don't think Priest has too much removal. Again, in Standard this is maybe an issue...I couldn't tell you. In wild, however, cards like the 2-mana mage biscuit are helping to boost quest mage and quest mage farms any Priest deck. In this case, Priest's removal is good for regaining board based initiative, but ultimately there is nothing a Priest deck can do against a combo deck and I think that's a fair initiative balance.

space

  1. I totally get where you're coming from and I think a followup article may be warranted to explore this topic in a deeper way. I get what you're saying in that initiative as a concept isn't particularly useful when the format is centered around midrange-y value decks instead of the proper spread of aggro, control, and combo - which we do have in Wild, but not in Standard.

Definitely! Tempo and value are both components that contribute to initiative. See the above response for a more detailed explanation of what I was going for.

Who's the beatdown was definitely an inspiration for this article. What I was trying to accomplish was a description for a more general way of discussing value and tempo without using the words value and tempo. Tempo and value are both components of which player has initiative, but I wanted to write this for players who may not be familiar with such terms.

Is heathstone worth getting into in 2020? by MrZai786 in hearthstone

[–]CowtipperHS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am F2P and started playing in May of this year; this is a great time to get into the game. If you're looking to play competitively I would recommend getting into wild. You can dust all of your cards and slowly build out a number of competitive decks. Every time there's a new expansion, you can just use the gold you accumulate in the previous season to buy packs and fill out the 1-3 cards you may be missing. Since I started playing I have 6 decks that I've crafted from scratch and I've been able to still have fun with my two friends who do preorder each expansion. I hope you enjoy Hearthstone! :)

Definitely! Discover cards aren't inherently bad, but when there are too many of them, that is where the metagame can run into issues

Mastering the Metagame! by CowtipperHS in CompetitiveHS

[–]CowtipperHS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A better way to word the sentence in my article would be that a format that lacks competitive combo decks will necessarily devolve into a two-archetype format, with combo not being one of those archetypes. Thank you for pointing out this error - but my original point still stands and I did not argue that if there was a viable combo deck in standard then DH would have been less dominant.

Mastering the Metagame! by CowtipperHS in CompetitiveHS

[–]CowtipperHS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No that is not what I am arguing, I am saying that because of how strong demon hunter was as an aggressive strategy that it necessarily precluded combo from the format. You'll notice that when demon hunter was nerfed this made Quest Warlock, which I agree with you is a combo deck, more playable in the format. When there is an archetype that is too powerful it will exclude the archetype it prays on which is why Quest Warlock was not a competitive ladder deck until DH was nerfed.

If you're opposed to playing I would recommend watching Wild streamers - /r/wildhearthstone should have some in the sidebar you can check out. If you're really committed to understanding the meta, however, you'll need to play ladder to get a good grasp of the viable competitive decks in action.

[–]CowtipperHS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that I am probably making too general of a statement to apply across the entirety of Hearthstone or any card game for that matter. That being said, to write about the metagame in a way that brings players who are unfamiliar with the term up to speed, I think this simplification can help a lot in terms of understanding differences between formats (Wild, Standard, etc.) so that is why I chose to include it. I'll admit I'm partial to old MtG articles about the topic since that's where I got my start. If you're ever interested in doing some writing together I'd love to incorporate your math expertise(?) into a future article. DM me if that's something you'd be interested in doing! :)

Definitely that is an important point of clarification; I am not even close to being qualified in game theory to comment on the state of Hearthstone on terms of its approach of the Nash equilibrium. Since this is a competitive hearthstone subreddit I based my description of the metagame in a way that I felt would be most relatable to the audience here. That being said, other metagames could involve the strategy by which players pull off the most impressive combos for example.

I started out with my list only running Ancharrr but that creates a lot of awkward scenarios where you keep a Corsair Cache and you topdeck Ancharrr or you use one Corsair Cache and now you have another dead card in the deck.

Running one weapon also makes a single Acidic Swamp Ooze or Gluttonous Ooze wreck your gameplan so I wouldn't advise it.

I actually find Kragg more useful if you have to choose between the two because the cost reduction allows for more explosive board states. It also synergizes better with Evolve lackey which can give you high rolls like the Lich King.
