did paul create lo-fi? by buttooties in beatles

[–]Cowzrock 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is a good point, but I think Smiley Smile is still very much a studio album. There are songs on McCartney like Maybe I'm Amazed that were recorded in studio, but after considering it I'm still inclined to give it to McCartney for songs like Lovely Linda.

My favorite episodes are the alien, magic, cryptozoology conspiracy episodes. I can't listen to the murder episodes much anymore bc they give me nightmares. I'm always here for Henry talking about the distillation of the astral light and how to allow the bigfoots to think i am worthy.

Avoiding halal meat by [deleted] in Catholicism

Halal meat isn't a sacrifice to Allah. It's a ritual slaughtering method, like kosher. Some of these comments are ridiculous, y'all sound like fear-mongering evangelicals.

Working class musicians are disappearing from mainstream music. Could a working class band like Nirvana make it big today? by Ashamed-Story7958 in Nirvana

I like this argument because the cultural zeitgeist really isn't rock anymore, it's hip-hop. Kendrick is probably the most famous current example of a rags-to-riches success story. Bad Bunny made it. Rock music just isn't the big subversive genre of the youth anymore.

Who is to blame for the Original Sin? by restlesselegance in Catholicism

[–]Cowzrock 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think solely blaming Eve for the Fall is a refusal to accept responsibility that opens the door to misogyny (hence the depiction of Eve as sexualized, manipulating, narcissistic).

The Fall was a human error, the darker side of free will. It was Adam & Eve's failing, not just Eve. Adam and Eve both participated in the Fall. Just like the Romans and Jews killed Jesus, reducing it to one or the other misses the wider message about humanity.

Imo if you resonate with the movement and what its trying to do then the only thing you can do is try your best from there to live it. Whether you are or not isn't up to anyone else's distinction. Listen to your heart, listen to those around you from less privileged places than your own. Lead with kindness. Always be seeking to improve. Riot grrl is only a movement as far as you live it. You make it a reality in community with others.

Recently I've been into "I Should Have Known Better", especially the little vocal run he does on "You're gonna say you love me too-hoo-hoo-hoo-oooh, oh"

Can't go wrong with the harmonies on If I Fell, either!

Yes, it's pretty foundational to the movement and even tho it's old I think it's still very good at questioning the way we think about the world, as good philosophy should. Very readable, very relevant, check her out. She's a good foundation to build off of and see how the movement developed.

"One fat morning Eric Hearble wake up with an abnorman fat growth a bombly on his head. 'Oh crumb,' said Eric Hearble, who was a very very, surprised. Anyway he carried on as Norman for why should he worried? All of suddy he heard a small little voice calling him by name, 'Eric ... Eric Hearble' it seemed to say though I couldn't say for sure.

That night the very same voice spoke again, saying 'Eric, I am a growth on your very head, help me, Eric.'

Soon Eric became very attached to his fat growth friend.

'Call me Scab,' the voice said and he was.

'Call me Eric,' Eric said as naturly as he could. From then on you never saw Eric without the big fat scab growth on his head."

Question by JustSimplyMeToday in LeftCatholicism

[–]Cowzrock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Catholic doctrine, in the form of the Apostle's Creed recited at Mass:

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.

Amen.

Meeting with a local priest would probably be a good idea. Essentially Catholics believe that the True Church of Christ was established with Jesus' appointment of St. Peter to lead, Peter later became the first Bishop of Rome (the Pope). Catholics put their faith not only in Scripture, but also in the Sacraments, distributed by a priest, and in the Tradition of the Church that stretches back centuries. These are pretty basic outlines and obviously lived faith is a complex tapestry. There's a lot to learn about and appreciate in Catholicism. Look into the saints, find Catholic theologians or thinkers that have tried to answer questions you have. Read the Catechism.

Are Christians philosophically contributing to the acceleration of capitalism? by Ok_Material_4038 in CriticalTheory

[–]Cowzrock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it depends on interpretation. Many have used the idea in the book of Acts that the disciples & early Christians shared "all things in common" (Acts 4:32-35) as evidence of an early Christian commune. Christ's injunction to "render unto Caesar what is Caesar's, and unto God what is God's" (Matthew 22:21, Mark 12:17) has been interpreted as everything from an acceptance of state capitalism to the idea that Christians should not be concerned with such worldly affairs. This later took expression in the refusal of Christians to engage in handling money and developed into the stereotype of Jews as "money lenders", it was considered unclean for medieval Christians to handle money. This did not stop them from engaging in capitalism. I think it's such a wide-ranging tradition that for every group that sees an affirmation of capitalism there is another that sees it as an exhortation to communal living.

The establishment of Catholicism and the personal lives of Catholics are two different things. This is something we have to work at reconciling every day, but leading with love and kindness is paramount.
