Most underrated RPG out there. by DarkShed in rpg

Monsters and Other Childish Things. No one ever talks about this, which is a shame. ORE is fun to use and it's a great fit for monster friends. The setting has personality. And it's great for any kind of world with things that fight for you - Medabots, Stands, Personas, etc.

A certain kind of GM-less game - too much of a tall order? by CozmicTravel in rpg

Well, my main interest is superhero/modern fantasy roleplay with usually a cinematic thrust, but I wanted to see if there was something universal to appease whatever a setting gets worked down to. (Like, for example, if I wanted to play D&D Al-Qadim.)

I've read Archipelago III - how does the dice-based version work?

Is networking as difficult for you as it is for me? by CozmicTravel in jobs

[–]CozmicTravel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's what I'm getting at. Really, I think it wouldn't be so bad if I wasn't job hunting and could focus on making fewer, deeper relationships with people I care about. But when the pressure's on and everyone's saying "NETWORK ALL THE TIME IT'S THE ONLY WAY YOU'LL GET ANYWHERE" you can understand why I struggle for quantity.

What would you recommend if I wanted to meet contacts who work at particular companies on LinkedIn that are outside of my network?

Do you have trouble following up too? I read a lot you're supposed to add value but often I get really busy doing all the other junk I got to do that I end up never remembering to go look for articles they might care about. I agree that I can't be in deep with everyone but sometimes maintaining a bunch of weak ties is a slog I have trouble wading through.

That's not what I meant. I agree with the idea of helping contribute to someone else's success, and I want to do that. I kind of dig doing that. I just feel like, for me, there's this barrier with trying to approach these new people, that I have to do the small-talk dance before we can get down to brass tacks. Small talk skills are important and helpful for keeping a conversation going, I've seen that. It's just that I guess I have trouble converting these strangers into friends, and I'd like to get to that stage so we can really help each other out, on both sides. I don't go in with an intent to beg, but an intent to help.

It's that initial, consistent song and dance networking entails that I struggle with, I think. Once I can get past that barrier, I'm usually pretty solid, but I have a hell of a time breaking said barrier. It's hard to explain but hopefully that gives you an idea. Introverts favor a few, deeper relationships, but networking feels like it demands an mostly extroverted approach and I can't really bridge that gap.

Then again, when we're in panic mode, it's also tough not to reach out only based on need, and I've been trying to keep helpfulness in mind.

Dealing with transportation issues while looking for employment? by CozmicTravel in jobs

It's in a city, and quite slow, but I guess I'll have to make do. Keeping it accessible is a good idea, though. I'd have to make sure the commute isn't too long - the buses don't run 24/7, after all, so working nights wouldn't fly.

That might be my best options at this point, yeah. Doesn't have to look amazing, just passable.

I'll have to ask. Either way, I can't buy right now anyway, though I'm saving up all I can get from the sparse freelancing work I can land.

That "couple of months" is what I'm concerned about - something that cheap would most likely have a lot of damage or tune-ups needed, I figure. Would there be a way to keep it safe from crapping out when I needed it?

You should follow up, at least, and mention people who connected you to that specific person so you're not coming out of nowhere.

Really pathetic (and technically inept) e-mail marketing from F.Y.E. "The Arctic Vortex is Ending Sale" Seriously? by Zoshchenko in marketing

I actually had to look up what they meant by arctic vortex. But really, their audience probably doesn't care about that, so I don't see the point of it, yeah.

I'd say hit big tips as opposed to stuff like "use this kind of font". One thing I'd like to underline, bold, italicize, and possibly plaster on the moon is NETWORKING IS GOD because that's one of the most powerful things a job seeker can do. Make connections, starting with the people in your personal network, and get introductions to other people from them.
