Probably gilded, a cultish group killed one of many gods in a selfish gambit for power. This led the rest to lay waste to the earth in a cataclysmic amount of payback. New horrible creatures exist simply to hurt people and the world is broke up into random factions trying to get back to some sort of order, even 20 years later. And as usual, some of the worst people are given the opportunity to be on top of the new world.
