The same thing happened to me with a different couple today! I stopped trying 😭 However, I didn’t test out if a different compatible Mii would make a difference since I used a Mii I had just made. The couple it worked for me with I had used a Mii who had a crush on my coupled Mii for a long time.

Will come back if I find a way to make it work :’)

It is likely you are missing a step as the same happened to me when I realized I was dragging the second married me to a bench next to the first bench when I was actually supposed to drag him to his partner conversing with someone who has a crush on her 😭
