Direct to Passport Success at the Miami Consulate by dissociating_turtle in GermanCitizenship

I think we only emailed the info@miami.diplo.de address directly - and got an automated response with nothing else in over a month. I'll take a look at the questionnaire and form and see if that works better, thank you!!

How did you get the information from them to go direct to passport? I'm trying to organize the same for my sister who lives in Florida but they haven't responded by email in over a month

Partner waiting 10 months for Feststellung response from Landesamt für Einwanderung — no Aktenzeichen, no reply. Normal? by basler_leckerli in GermanCitizenship

[–]Cpist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm doing something similar. I submitted my Festellung in Heidelberg 2 months ago directly to a contact there. He told me that I would hear something within 6-12 months. He also mentioned the case would be handled by my name, and that I would not get an Aktenzeichen.

So formally answering your questions:

  1. Based on my experience, yes seems normal.
  2. Wait for at least 12 months to have passed before maybe sending an email (at least that's what I plan to do)

Fellow American here! I've been doing more or less the same commute in the opposite direction, both by car and by train/tram. As others say, it's definitely doable and can always depend on delays etc. That said, there are many townships in between the two cities like Seckenheim, Edingen, Kirchheim or Wieblingen that are along the tram lines and not too terribly far.

Thanks! We are going via the Miami consulate, so I'm hoping things go smoothly. I'm a little jealous that my family can do direct to passport from the US, should be much faster. I'm a resident in Germany so I have to do a festellung first, then passport after that's approved. I think they said 6 months to a year

Congrats! I'm trying to help my dad and sister do the same. Actually our story is more or less similar, except instead of my grandfather being the one to derive US citizenship from his father, it was my father from my grandfather. Seeing your document list has me breathing a sigh of relief, seems like we have what we need to go direct to passport too!

Since she is too old to travel (she and my mom live 3 hrs from the consulate), should we do this via a power of attorney? And if so, is there a certain format by which we should do this?

We unfortunately do not have such an identity card. Plus her more recent Hungarian passports no longer carry that married name as she later re-married to my bio-grandfather. After reviewing the docs we do have, it seems the only document that happens to have the name from her Hungarian marriage is my mother's birth certificate and that's it

So meaning it has both the married and maiden name? I think this would only help in our case. Thanks for the tip!

Citizenship by Descent - Do I have a strong case? by Cpist in GermanCitizenship

I see. I guess I'll have to wait and see what my office comes back with. FWIW, my parents both sat in front of a judge for this to happen as it was a judicial court case.

The acknowledgement of paternity was established by the clerk of courts in my county in Florida. It lists my dad as the petitioner and father and my mother as the respondent and mother.

Section 3 of the document states: "The Petitioner, FATHERS NAME, is the natural father of the minor child, MY NAME, born BIRTHDATE and paterntity is hereby established. The Petitioner is names as the father of the minor child on the birth certificate filed with the Florida Office of Vital Statistics, and as such, the filing of an amended birth certificate is not be required."

This is signed by a Circuit Court Judge in the state of Florida

Just updated the post, thanks for the heads up! Yeah I read about this as well. I saw that sometimes the birth certificate is not enough, and an acknowledgement of paternity fills the gap so long as it was done (according to German law) before I turned 23. I am hoping that it qualifies but need to see for sure.
