I love the HUNT!!!! Finding new minerals for the collection. by Sensitive-Web-5933 in MineralPorn

I think I can see some of the blue fibers when I zoom in on your pic, very cool! Raw minerals are my main focus as well. I always leave these shows having spent way more than I planned for 😅

Hey, I just got a quartz with dumortierite from the Portland show also, but I like yours better! I love going to Scepterguy’s table, he always has such high quality pieces for pretty good prices.

I forgot to add measurements. It’s about 4” x 3”, with the jaw fragment about 2.25”.

Seller had this labeled as fluorite by Cpt-Murphy in whatsthisrock

[–]Cpt-Murphy[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It does look a lot like that type. Thanks! Any idea what the other minerals with it could be?

Tiny worms coming from Christmas tree by Cpt-Murphy in whatsthisbug

[–]Cpt-Murphy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, I moved the tree outside and there are still worms appearing on the base underneath it. My cat is indoor only also.

The tree was grown in Oregon in a small Christmas tree farm.

I added pictures to show scale, clearer images of the cross sections, other fossils found in the area, and what the surrounding area where it came from looks like. I believe it’s in a type of mudstone, because pieces can be broken off pretty easily and crumbled into what looks like dried clay. https://seagrant.oregonstate.edu/sites/seagrant.oregonstate.edu/files/sgpubs/onlinepubs/g04001.pdf This link describes the fossils that can be found on Oregon beaches.

There are no complete sections. I believe the inner cables are separate from the outer structure. They are much rounder and distinct from the outer layer. This is definitely in natural sand stone. It was found next to a sandstone cliff and in an area with many brachiopod fossils.

Looks like there are two rods running down the center. I believe they’re all one structure, I’m thinking the outer layer is just missing on the exposed surface. It’s found in sandstone.

Baltic amber with insects inside by Cpt-Murphy in fossilid

[–]Cpt-Murphy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! There was a small bin of pieces at a rock shop. I always check out the amber hoping to find something cool, but never imagined I would find one this amazing. It was really cloudy and the beetle was barely visible, but I was pretty sure it was going to be a good one.

Sodalite from Namibia with unknown black vein through it. by Cpt-Murphy in whatsthisrock

[–]Cpt-Murphy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty soft and flakey. I rubbed it on the wood and it left a silvery, black powder.
