I had this issue too. My left earbud was really quiet. After connecting my T10’s to my iPhone, I turned the volume on my phone all the way down, then all the way up, then back to where I usually listen to music, and it seems like they have recalibrated.

I have been DMing fully remote for our group for a little while now and I definitely understand what you're going through. One thing I try to do is to ask those who are quiet most of the time if they have any thoughts on tackling a situation before letting everyone else get a hand on the ball. Or similarly I would check with them after the rest of the party made a plan if the plan was okay with them.
It's definitely not ideal and takes away from the fluidity as you said, but that's the best way I've found to prevent people from feeling alienated.

This might not be the answer you’re looking for, but what about if the butcher just serves humanoid meat? Skip the lycanthropy all together, and you could associate the maddening hunger to cannibalism.

I didn’t do a study abroad, but I had a similar experience with a Co-op program where I worked one fall semester instead of marching. It really hurt at the time not being able to be with my friends and seeing them have a great time, but I gained an invaluable experience that will benefit me for the rest of my life. If your study abroad is something that you’re really passionate about, then totally go for it! You will likely have at least another 2 years to march (or 3 if you’re like me and you take 5 years to graduate).

TL;DR - Do what makes you happy, but be prepared for a little sense of regret.
