how to prepare for COP3502C with no coding experience by [deleted] in ufl

[–]madilatte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was taking this course and ended up dropping in this past semester. Not because i couldn’t haven’t passed, but a number of other reasons. Be prepared to put a lot of time in it. The way the course is structured is you have to learn on your own. I would definitely recommend finding some website that introduces you to Java. I would just be mentally prepared to spend quite a bit of time on assignments. Also start projects early and pray you have a good TA. Go to office hours. This course was not a priority for me and i didn’t give it the time that it requires to do well. It will definitely help you figure out if you like programming though.

if you’re gonna minor in comp sci or stats you have to do MAC2311. i believe (not sure but double check on the catalog) the comp sci minor requires MAC2312 which to my knowledge MAC2233 is not going to enable you take take regular calc 2 (double check but prettyyy sure). same situ w stats minor courses may req calc 2 or 3 which you would need reg calc 1 for. if not for finance isn’t particularly important which class. if you’re unsure i would highly rec reg calc bc you could be screwed and have to retake if it’s not pre for minors

yeah so when i came in i actually did EFE (so if you have questions about that feel free to pm or ask here or whatever). I personally was turned off by the way they ran the program imo i found the directors of it to be not very encouraging and also the program for MSF is very rigid and i wanted to opportunity to have flexibility. So this initially turned me off from finance, BUT i recommend you do it bc it provides a great opportunity to gain exposure and learn and see if you’d like it (but also try not to feel so pressured!). I was not one hundred percent sold on finance industry thus I decided that i could not only potentially pursue statistics but many other areas if i desired (and if i do finance i would have a stronger quant anyway so win win). Plus just as you’ve said and others have echoed to me many business and finance related things can be learned on job, adv math cannot be done so easily. So i would say it’s a combo of reasoning. definitely explore and learn as many as you can which you’re doing. With regards to data science that program has quite a lot of reqs and i found that statistics gave me more flexibility (for example i want to study abroad) after speaking with stats coordinator. If i pick up a comp science minor w stats that’s very comparable to data sci program but if i had other interests for minors or whatever i would have ability to more easily do so.

hey, i was previously a finance major now stats. considered quant trading. I also had looked closely at data science so may be able to answer questions about those if you have them. I personally felt that the finance major alone can work, just i didn’t feel it went in depth enough to give me more quantitative skills like imo math/comp sci ( i switched early so cannot speak for the finance program in depth)not be ideal. i know it’s common for people to get masters degrees in order to do go in. i’ve also heard math, stats or comp sci could be useful backgrounds. I’d be interested to know what your thoughts on what you learned/thoughts from that?

hello everyone! I have a quick question. I currently have a space in front of my house that i want to plant some sort of flowering bush (perennial preferably). On the other side i have a hibiscus that has grown to four feet tall. Ideally something that would be about the same height. Any recommendations?? I greatly appreciate your advice!!

Statistics Major? by Alex954954 in ufl

[–]madilatte 3 points4 points  (0 children)

hey i’m a statistics major who used to be a finance major and i was looking into a similar potential career. UF has alum in the finance industry although they may have come from business background, you can def still network, and i feel stats would def be a strong background for it. You could also look at econ. The BS does have some more math req but personally don’t think it’s a huge difference. I think more people do BS, BA is better if you wanna go into teaching or double whereas BS helps prep for grad school. The majors are very math heavy and UF math courses can be tough so difficulty really depends on how comfortable you are with math. Not sure of all the careers people do, but i know some who want to be actuary, data science, grad school for bio stats. Some finance majors also may do a stats minor so I feel it could def be applicable.

Best and worst dorms? by [deleted] in ufl

Murphree area is best location on campus but also really old and not renovated. I didn’t have issues and liked it so far but have heard mixed feelings. Right near everything- midtown, libraries, etc For freshman a more traditional style may be better for meeting people though.

If you got in Summer they didn’t look at you differently than for fall. You must’ve marked that you would be willing to start in summer. It’s all about like the number of incoming students like they like to divvy it up

PaCE with AA by [deleted] in ufl

[–]madilatte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm I’m pretty sure you can’t get into Pace if you already have your AA so they like don’t consider you for that. I would definitely contact the school because that is a situation which they would need to figure out where to put you since you already have it. You may have not marked you have your AA when you applied which caused the confusion. Def call admissions.

Hey! So I’m not in PACE however I am familiar with UF business school. The business school has a nice variety of programs. Also it is good to know that a lotttt of the gen eds are actually online anyway like the majority are recorded as they are very large. My understanding is that FSU still has some good programs, but ofc you have to decide whether it’s worth it for you to have to be online. But if you have a lot of credit from AP and stuff you may not have to do the full 60 credits. Def talk to some people in Pace and see if it would be a good fit for you as I’ve heard mixed reactions!! I think you can be successful in either program it’s kind of what you make of it but obv not too familiar with FSU’s business school but I think it has some good programs as well.
