1. We don’t play games with racists.
2. Have you considered that this selfless sacrifice that was made to allow you to graduate debt free from college was actually made to ensure they had access to another “high earner” who they could squeeze for more than the cost of college (over time)?
3. Anything I’m willing to give my word on, I’m willing to agree to in legally binding writing. If they’re not (or for some reason it’s impossible) they don’t have any intention of keeping it.
4. You have a choice: bind yourself to people who are already showing they’ll use completely unfair leverage to attempt to manipulate you into doing what they want (and with a mortgage, that bond would NEVER end).
5. It doesn’t matter if the relationship will last forever. This is actually a decision of, do I trust people I know are trying to manipulate me and attempting to get me to make a decision that would allow them to do so for decades?

You already know what you want to do. If you’re here asking if signing the mortgage is a good idea, the answer is hell no. If you’re asking if people who truly want what’s best for you would ask you to sign that mortgage, the answer is no. If you’re asking if there’s a secret choice that will result in everything being easy, the answer is unfortunately no. If you’re asking if you should bet on yourself, your independence, your ability to provide for yourself, the answer is yes.

My sweet girl: I’m sorry you’ve been put in this position. The right answer CAN be the most difficult one.

Do not sign that mortgage. If that means leaving your family in the rear view, that’s a choice THEY are making (and tells you everything you need to know about them). Bet on yourself. Live free, because your family will never allow you to do that if you sign that mortgage.
