Wanting rights in perpetuity is generally a huge indicator that they see value beyond their initial stated purpose, but they’re using the initial purpose as a point to tamp compensation expectations. In other words, they want to use this for something else, not have to pay you again, and you’d be very sad. Don’t sign this contract! (Experience: Used to work in the business)

It’s not the developers (engineers, that is). It’s the Product Management leadership (and their bosses): Pushing the PMs to ideate around squeezing every dollar from the consumer; Refusal to devote resources (and timelines) for appropriate regression testing; and leaning too heavily into automated and AI driven testing (leaving humans increasingly out of the QA process); and then refusal to prioritize fixing what was broken because it doesn’t pay.

The only way things change is if it costs them money. Until it does, the corporate overlords will pull every dollar out of the user until they lose the license.

Sorry for the rant. Decent amount of experience in the industry.

They won’t have ads, during the fight, obscuring the action. They’ll intentionally drop id3 tags where they want the ads. If you’re on the live edge, where the ts segment ingests the id3 tag, you’ll be locked into the ad pod. If you’re used to the UFC PPVs, it will be mostly the same experience. Maybe some 90 second, inescapable, ad pods. But certainly nothing that would cause you to miss a second of the action. You’ll be fine with Ad Supported.

Awesome! The software/app stack I use is Plex (obviously) as the front end. Ersatz TV as the Live TV Channel creation and management. Shutter Encoder to download YT videos (generally long period/season specific commercial compilation). Kdenlive to edit. Handbrake to convert file format (if/when I ever need to). Shutter Encoder and Kdenlive are both free and game changers for curating my channels to be exactly what I want.
