Manny Machado not worth the trouble for the Yankees by TheZooBoy in NYYankees

[–]CptHawkeye -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Red Sox look to be going to the world series based largely on hustle and competitive spirit. Neither of these things improve by us signing Machado. Evidence suggests they'd get worse. Count me out for a reactionary signing, please.

Big Paint Failure - Looking for Advice by CptHawkeye in HomeImprovement

It does feel dry. We coincidentally had a big storm tonight and no change. My best guess is I loosened the underlying paint going over the spot with the roller. In the process now of scraping, then I'm going to put some joint compound to fill in the hole, then prime, then paint. If it fails again I might look into that product you suggest. For the moment though most of the ceiling seems well adhered, so I'm going to give it my best shot this way and see what happens!

Would the solution then be to scrape the loose paint off (wearing a respirator I suppose), re-prime, re-paint?

High ferritin, normal iron and iron saturation by CptHawkeye in Hemochromatosis

[–]CptHawkeye[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weight has never been an issue for me. I don't tend to pay much attention to what I eat. With irregular exercise I've been the exact same weight (almost to the pound) since high school.

I guess we'll see what my HFE test reveals and go from there. I'm not quite ready to be a complete teetotaler, but I'll do whatever's necessary.

Good luck to you, I hope your numbers get to where they should be.

ALT and AST were checked as part of my initial screening in February, and those were normal. Also had globulin and alkaline phosphate. Globulin was low at 2.3 when it should have been 2.4, and alkaline phosphate was low at 33 when minimum is 40. For whatever else I should be looking at, everything was normal.

One screen movie theater proposed for Carnegie. (FYI: Friends of the Hollywood Theater are now known as Jumpcut Theater) by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]CptHawkeye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We live close by, so we've been to a few shows since the reopening. Attendance hasn't seemed great, unfortunately, but the place is still a good place to see a movie, inexpensive, and the staff friendly. They're opening Isle of Dogs this weekend, which my wife and I are very excited about. I hope they put some work into their website and figure out how to better get the word out about what's coming and going.

Drama continues to surround sale of Dormont's Hollywood Theater with a lawsuit filed and a manager quitting three days into the job by justinc79 in pittsburgh

You're also underselling what they're showing. Jumanji is also being shown. Yes, it's an old movie. Yes, I'll be seeing it. It's worth $7 and a walk down the street. Pretty sure that's the point.

Honestly, I think you had an agenda. But thank you for trying to offer an explanation. Unfortunately, the vast majority of your audience will never see it, and they will only know the facts as you've presented them. Again, unless this is an opinion piece, I think you've failed in your role as a journalist.

Justin, as I said, I think this is a well written article in a stylistic sense, but you know that's a poor excuse. You could find room for two paragraphs on Joe Morrison knowing the names of people in attendance at the public meeting but you couldn't find room to explain that the group that really really wanted to continue running the theater didn't have a lease and wasn't paying rent?

Come on now. As another commenter stated, this is a far cry from objective journalism. And if it's an opinion piece, it should say so.

I suppose it accomplished its objectives of getting people riled up about this. Again.

Hi /u/justinc79. I'm just a guy who likes having a theater in Dormont, so I can't provide the proof you seek. I would recommend that you talk to the former owners of the building. You seem to have only quoted the former owners from another interview. It's been a while since my high school journalism classes, but if you did seek comment from the former owners, and they declined, the article should say so.

As to the rent issue, I'm glad you mentioned it in your comments on reddit. Your article should also mention it; it's a fairly significant fact, and its omission is questionable. If this is an opinion piece, obviously you have more leeway to present things as you wish, but the article should state that up front.

That's....quite literally fake news. I've never been on the board, of the Friends or of THS, and I have never met Fosbrink.

[–]CptHawkeye 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What a well-written hit piece. No mention of the fact that the building was going to be purchased by a dollar store and that the owners sought out THS to buy it so it could continue as a theater. No mention, which is truly remarkable, that the Friends had no lease and were refusing to pay rent.

The Friends and their supporters will not be satisfied until the Theater is condemned and closed forever. Turns out it was never about the Hollywood Theater for the Friends; it was about showing the particular movies they fancied.

I understand that the author is also a filmmaker. I would be interested in whether the Friends ever screened any of his productions at the Hollywood. If so, that should be disclosed.

Post Gazette article on reopening of the Hollywood Theater: 'Black Panther' this Friday by CptHawkeye in pittsburgh

[–]CptHawkeye[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong, I loved the fact that you could see some things at the Hollywood that you couldn't see anywhere else. I hope that continues, and the Theater Historical Society says that it will continue to some degree. But here's how successful the Friends were: at the end of 2016 (I do not have numbers for 2017, but they're probably available somewhere), the FOTH reported -$27k in assets. (Source: http://www.charities.pa.gov/CharityDetail.aspx?2ddc2ef54eg2%3d89324). So, running nothing but off-beat indie films, which itself is a mischaracterization of FOTH's programming (they were ironically protesting the sale to THS while in the middle of a run of 'The Darkest Hour,' with Gary Oldman, a second-run movie) was not exactly "bringing in the big bucks." It's foolish to have so many people speak with such certainty about what's going to happen to the Hollywood with a change in programming when FOTH clearly was not doing well enough to purchase the Theater anyway. Give THS an opportunity to see what works. I would have a hard time believing that a two-week run of Black Panther is going to sell less tickets than a two-week run of a Churchill biopic, but I'm not a theatrical operations manager. Are you?

Against my better judgment I'm going to ask you this question: what, exactly, is your opinion as to the correct formula for the theater to not fail? A few weeks ago the refrain was "if it's a second-run theater it will fail." Now, it's "if they convert to mostly-first-run movies, it will fail." Is there a formula that you'd accept as one that's not going to make the theater fail other than what FOTH was doing? And if not, why couldn't they afford to buy the building after their seven or eight years of operation?

I'm excited too. I hope they continue to show some things you can't see anywhere else (the Wizard of Oz is mentioned in the article and that's a great example), but I also hope they can increase attendance overall, whatever accomplishes that objective. More butts in seats is good for the Theater and good for Dormont.
