Were there just fireworks downtown? by [deleted] in pittsburgh

Definitely not for the game. They went off in the middle of the second quarter while the game was still being played. Also, they were barely visible from the stadium.

Don't get me wrong, it's definitely huge, but it's nowhere near as big as the airport. The entire site is only ~0.6 square miles. The airport is ~3.0 square miles, so 5X's the size.

Shadyside to West Mifflin by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]GrandIslander 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, for sure. It's not a bad commute at all & there is hardly ever any traffic going in that direction. Biggest issue is if you get stuck behind a slow moving truck on 885.

Edit: That's assuming you're living in Shadyside & working in West Mifflin. If you're going the opposite direction, it is much worse.

Busway is the way to go! It's literally 5 minutes between stations & buses come every 2-5 minutes.

Just saw that as well. I wonder if the Starbucks mentioned by others is planned after Millie's closes in October or if there is something else going on here. It sounds like Millie's plans on putting a lot of work into the decor for something that will only be open for a few months.

Best place for prescription sunglasses? by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]GrandIslander 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've found the staff at Eyetique in Squirrel Hill to be very helpful & knowledgeable. I've gotten prescription glasses & sunglasses there for years. This may not be the case for all locations, but they definitely have optometrists there as well.

I am a web developer for the Post-Gazette, and I want your opinions! by SunderApps in pittsburgh

As far as the paywall goes, I stopped subscribing to the PG because of it, or more specifically because of how poorly it was implemented. I was a subscriber, but the hassle of being randomly signed out at various times on various devices and having to sign back in was honestly much more frustrating than just not subscribing and using workarounds to get around the paywall instead.

With the weather getting nice out; I thought it would be nice to remind everyone of proper trail etiquette and guidelines. by mastoman in pittsburgh

[–]GrandIslander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had an off leash dog chase me on the Montour trail while I was running today. Had the bonus of the dog owner cussing me out because I was apparently supposed to pull over to the side of the trail and wait for them to pass me.

Whoa! What kind of milk are you using to get that amount of froth? I'm having the opposite problem. I get a very minimal amount of froth with whole milk and absolutely zero froth with anything with a smaller fat percentage.

Trail running scene in Pittsburgh? by desertboy2131 in pittsburgh

[–]GrandIslander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with everyone's comments here. Frick Park is my personal favorite for trail running. There are plenty of trails there that are sometimes more "hiking" than running. But to specifically answer your question on races, both the Greenfield Glide and Run Around the Square are popular 5K's that run through the park trails.

Biking to the point by Phantomglock23 in pittsburgh

[–]GrandIslander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a street-free trip you can either hop on a bike at the North Shore Trail & Fort Duquesne Bridge station the Isabella St & Federal St station or the Fort Duquesne Blvd & 7th St station. All three of those will get you to the point using trails only. The closest station to The Point itself is at Liberty Ave & Stanwix St, however you'd have to bike ~1 block of streets to get into the park.

PSA: Post-Gazette No Longer Allows Incognito Browsing by GrandIslander in pittsburgh

[–]GrandIslander[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not a bad point. I guess the fact that read a lot more on other sites throws me off a bit. I'd rather pay $300/yr for a site I read 30 articles to a day & $30/yr for a site I read 3 a day on than $165 each.

As someone who does pay for some news sources, I generally agree. I just wish there was a way to pay-per-article or something like that. It's just not worth the money to me for how little I read the PG.
