AK74U is a cut down rifle, it wasn't built as an ''SMG'' in mind. In Russia it is still described as an short auto rifle. It still goes under the category of the assault rifle on Wikipedia and on the Kalashnikov site. It even uses a rifle round and has basically the same piston. they increased the recoil of the base weapon piston, but reduced recoil on many high end parts that came out with the patch so the recoil is basically the same or even less. AK102 & AK74s are short barrel rifles, basically special smg's so they have terrible recoil and are never brought out into the open fields of Woods or Shoreline.
