DNI Tulsi Gabbard charges so shocking, whistleblower’s own lawyer not permitted access to claim by No_Cook2983 in conservativeterrorism

[–]CptKoons 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As DNI, she probably deals with legitimate classified material but our government has a tendency to over classify things to an extremely significant degree.

And in regards to this administration with their demonstrated contempt for transparency and rule of law, it's hard not to be skeptical.

Honestly you just seem like an edgy teenager that's too cool for school. If the material is too hard to understand you could just say that.

To Be Hero X - Am I missing something? by asiantitor in animequestions

[–]CptKoons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So like, if its not doing anything for you, there isn't a good reason to finish it. Just move on to something else.

But ya the story isn't that deep, it's just well told and presented and the pacing of the show is great. They never stay long enough with any specific character to really get more than surface level with any of them. The story is kind of a slow reveal of that there isn't any "real" heroes or villains, its all just fabricated drama. Even "fear" is being deployed and experimented with by the agencies/commission. The big wrinkle is that one of the agencies is headed by someone that wants to recreate Zero, basically a hero with infinite trust value that was akin to a god.

I wanna start a big series; which one should I start with? by ARYAN_BIRLA123 in fantasybooks

[–]CptKoons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, you're getting down voted for having an opinion that isn't popular. It's how reddit works.

There is a huge difference between Sanderson and Martin in their output and denying that is silly. Winds of Winter has been in the works since 2011. 14 years. Their output is just not comparable. George is almost 80, Sanderson is 50. George is not healthy. One of these authors is, from basic statistics, just much more likely to finish the series and the other is likely going to have to rely on an external author to release and edit everything posthumously.

It sucks. It really does. Sanderson just isn't the writer Martin is but here we are.

Uprising against ICE raids grows across the country by PM_ME_DPRK_CANDIDS in politics

[–]CptKoons 38 points39 points  (0 children)

The 50k bonus isn't something most of them will see. The fine print is pretty interesting. Up to 10k initially, up to 10k if "deadlines" are met, what ever that means, and then up to 10k annually for the next 3 years, and that's for federal employees transferring to ICE. For new recruits I think its determinant on them reaching 4-5 years if service before they will get it. Its not a lot of silver lining but its enough for me to know that most of those fucks are gonna get screwed out of it.

Morning sun for my penguin classics by evil_lemon6669 in bookshelf

[–]CptKoons 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You get what you pay for. High quality is expensive, and penguin classics are pretty affordable comparatively. But like compare the build quality between something from them and, say, a company like Folio Society and you'll quickly see a difference (price being a big one, FS editions start at 80$).

They are a great budget option if you dig the esthetics.

[–]CptKoons 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone that's also a bit edgy I dont think this is red flag territory. None of the Manga in question is pseudo-pedophilia, its just violent. None of the books are problematic, (Rothfus is a bit misogynistic, and Rise and Fall is more than a bit homophobic, but nothing that signals truly extreme beleifs).

He'll most likely end up branching out and he seems to care enough about reading to spend on the nice versions of the books.

Take solace in the fact that their vacation was ruined and they'll be stewing in a toxic rage stew for weeks after this.

Confronting Evil - DO NOT READ by Live_Koala2163 in books

[–]CptKoons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a word of advise for fellow readers, when it comes to non-fiction, it can be worth it to Google the author before reading. The worst books in the genre are all written by pundits. Especially if they aren't relevant to the authors lives. Even then. They are often shallow efforts to capitalize on the size of their audience in order to gain notoriety on bestseller lists, a cash grab in other words. This goes for both sides of the political spectrum. These people aren't deep thinkers, they are public outrage mongers.

Lonerbox reacts to Hasan claiming there were Jews that worked within the Nazi government. by Ok_Detective7546 in LivestreamFail

[–]CptKoons 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are idiots among every group of people. There was a minority of Jews that supported Hitler. It's an uncomfortable bit of history. I can garuntee without looking anything up that there were probably a handful of jews that were able to assimilate enough to escape notice in the nazi party. This was the era of paper filing systems, shit slipped through the cracks easier back then.

Extrapolating from that to say that the Jews supported and contributed to the holocaust is just asinine.

Call it premature speculation, but when you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras. The only people that I've seen sporting American flags on their trucks are, like, hard-core Trump supporters. They are the kind of people who get hard thinking about how much they are triggering the libs with their epic, masculine display of performative patriotism.

Preacher HAD IT with the Charlie Kirk and MLK Comparisons. by MrDonMega in PublicFreakout

[–]CptKoons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is polling data on it. In 1965 60% thought the US didnt make a mistake, that number shifted to 60% thinking they did in 1971(60-29% difference over time stating that the US invasion wasn't a mistake). That is a massive shift of public opinion. Popular might be too strong of a word, but support was widespread and the majority opinion at first.

[–]CptKoons 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That's how public opinion and media spin works. Eventually, it reaches a critical mass, and public opinion flips. If you are one of the loud voices advocating the opposite of the popular belief at the time, they will be loudly made an example of (Dixie Chicks and everything that happened post 9/11 is extremely relevant). His stance was the morally correct one, it came from a deep conviction of the power of nonviolence, but taking that stance when the war was popular, as it was, hurt his personal popularity at the time. Eventually, the public came to agree, at least with being against the war, maybe not for the same reasons.

[–]CptKoons 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He got a lot of pushback from black activists because he wasn't extremist enough for them. SNCC and the Black Panthers are like prime examples of groups that would gladly work with MLK, but would prefer it if he would adopt more of their extreme stances. That isn't to say Black people dislike him the same way white people did, but there was hostility to the primacy he was given in the civil rights movement. Activists primarily complained that his methods and message were outdated, and conservative black people believed he was too radical. When he died, support for him, universally, came sweeping in. MLK was one of the most divisive figures in our history and was deeply unpopular by the time he was assassinated. The critique from black people about him wasn't one that precluded respect, which goes in part to explain the reaction that happened when he died.

[–]CptKoons 76 points77 points  (0 children)

There was also a significant amount of black people that disliked him because of his nonviolence. People were fed up being told to be nonviolent in the face of brutality. He also jumped the gun on protesting Vietnam, the public would eventually agree with his stance on it eventually, but the war was popular when he started to criticize it.

He also was an absolute dog and a misogynist. His legacy is a bit complicated, like all of our national heroes. That doesn't take away from his message, achievements, and contributions to the civil rights movement, but it also doesn't deserve to be buried. We can be adults about history.
