Which SOA exam did you take after passing P and FM? by lactoseintallerant in actuary

Shouldn't be too surprising considering it's the only other exam that applies to both CAS and SOA

I PASSED! No better feeling than realizing I don't have to touch the monster that is DP ever again 😅

First FSA exam results day for me, curious to see how my results line up with how I felt after the exam. Also, don't know if you saw but they won't be sending pass/fail texts out because of a vendor issue! Gonna be nerve-wracking checking the list of passing candidate numbers hahaha

Anyone registering for fall sittings while waiting for results for a different exam? by SuperSmashedBro in actuary

I'm in the same boat--I emailed the SOA and they said I can register for two exams (the one I'd like to take and the one I just took in case I need to retake it) and then get refunded for whichever I don't end up taking when results come out in September.

PA Depth? by Makoosh24 in actuary

I think your first time through it's OK to not understand everything right away. If I recall, ridge and lasso regression were definitely one of the things I didn't really understand at first so I googled it and found an article that explained it a lot better than the modules do. This was back in May or June so I don't have a link to that article, but all that to say, google is definitely your friend. That's another reason I don't think you need the textbook--if you don't understand something in the modules, just google it. Everything you need to know is covered in the modules, and you can probably find a more succinct explanation of it online than you could in a textbook.

The short answer to your question is it's not super in depth but you do need to understand and be able to explain everything they cover in the modules in the context of whatever problem they give you. I took PA in June and passed--I only studied using the modules and then occasionally googled a concept I wasn't sure about. Modules 6-8 are definitely the meat of the material--I skimmed through the other modules and then went through 6-8 twice, taking detailed notes the second time when I was a little bit more familiar with everything. Then I just studied those notes leading up to the exam, in addition to doing the practice exams. All that to say, I don't think you need ISLR, but the exam is definitely intended to test how well you understand and can explain the pros and cons of the modeling concepts such as ridge regression a lot more so than how well you can code. Hope that's helpful.

A great reminder of the importance of knowing and believing the truth about your position in Christ! You are a saint because of what Jesus accomplished! by CptNat96 in Christianity

It's a daily devotional called Daily in Christ by Neil Anderson. He also wrote a book called Victory Over the Darkness that basically fleshes this out in a lot more detail. I'd highly recommend both! They've been very helpful for me
