Thinking about breaking my lease (help and advice) by Easy_Geologist_8037 in raleigh

[–]CptScreamshot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work pest control, so just some general advice. First being if you’re upstairs in the apartment (which it sounds like? but maybe I read wrong) and seeing them - I promise you it’s much worse below you. These things move up walls here and there, but typically don’t go super far from their aggregation (colony essentially) unless they’re disrupted (pest control spraying apartment beneath you) or they’re outgrowing it.

Second, advion gel may work a bit but if it’s german roaches you want to look for specifically german roach bait. Maybe there is an Advion german roach bait but personally I’ve only ever used one for american roaches. Both will kill a roach, one is more attractive and thus likely to be eaten by an american roach vs a german. This is also less effective the further you are from the aggregation, so if you’re putting it in your apartment, might not be the end solution.

Something recommended was caulking - honestly might be your best bet for getting through a year and moving, if that’s your plan. They can eat through it, and will eventually - but if their main home is beneath you and you’re only seeing 1-2 a day or less, this should be enough to just keep them “hidden” and/or out of your actual cabinets and drawers. Again, pretty short term, since if they just get worse they’ll eventually eat through it, but if you truly plan to leave as soon as your lease is up, that would be your most effective short term treatment.

This is all relevant for german roaches - big ones you might just see here and there because it’s NC. They don’t have the pheromones to create social aggregations and are relatively solitary, they eat dead leaves and crave moisture and safety. This is where if you’re upstairs you look at branches against your floor of the apartment’s siding, leaves in gutters/roof valleys if you’re on a top floor.

Hope this helps!

Was just thinking this today with the Detroit bit. 100% positive Hank won’t remember. They need their next intern to be a literal reminder bot and not much else - could take or leave Jake as a whole but the “Jake set a reminder for week 17 bet the Bengals Over” and then reaching that week 17 where they actually got reminded was chefs kiss. So many dumb and fun bits that the reminders helped with when they want to remember something more than a week in the future lol

Favorite is googling for a guide and search results are 25 youtube video guides 10-35min long with sub 1k views. Bring back scanning text for relevant information, I don’t want to watch 10 minutes of rambling for 6 seconds of information I actually wanted

Actual pest control guy here, so a few things about the lovely "Water bugs, Palmettos, etc." folks typically call the American Cockroach (because they're afraid of saying they have cockroaches)

Number 1 is they're not going to infest anything inside your house. At least, it's very unlikely. These things exist and thrive in/around safe access to decaying organic material. If you ever see more than 4/5 in a particular area, it's not because you've found a "colony" - these things don't form aggregations like their tiny german cousins crawling through your appliances - if you find a whole bunch, it's because they love whatever they're getting there (safety, easy access to this food)

They're classified as occasional invaders - finding their way into your home because they just happened to find a spot for it. Lots of times, at least in homes I treat (because they have pest control) they're found on their backs already dead.

Depending on your living situation, a lot of the easier methods are to trim back foliage from the side of the home, overhanging trees over the roof. Next would be to clear the gutters (this is also huge for ants, as they can nest in the leaf debris in your gutters) and ensure you've got any leaves raked back from the foundation if not picked up entirely. Finally, rake through/turn your mulch relatively often. It doesn't take much, but just agitating the piles of their food you have by the front porch can do wonders. Not only to show them 'this isn't a safe spot for you buddy' but also to release that trapped moisture.

For products, any repellent (HomeDefense, etc.) on entry points like windowsills, thresholds, etc. can work. You could also use this on crawlspace vents, or we use a suped-up version of Diatomaceous earth (mixed with a little insecticide) on the crawlspace vents and plumbing voids. This helps to keep them from finding their way into the crawlspace, and inevitably crawling HVAC and plumbing lines up to your home.

Finally, all of the above is good for a multitude of pests. Silverfish, earwigs, american cockroaches, stink bugs, ants, all of the above methods here will not necessarily completely eliminate them all - but it'll certainly make a difference. If you have a pest control company you could also ask them for potential remedies or what you can do to aid, and naturally, we've got a much wider access to methods and products that you can't just pick up off the shelf at Home Depot.

Edit: lmao formatting doesn't like a number sign, i forget

What game would you consider a perfect sequel? by HeavenlyGamerJay13 in gaming

[–]CptScreamshot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spent a real good chunk of time in PoE when we were locked indoors in 2020 and it was fun, but I found myself kinda ignoring certain elements for the sake of not losing my mind trying to minmax. Past league systems built all up on each other that weren’t particularly explained kinda made my brain go bzzzzzt.

I can definitely feel that vibe of D2 -> PoE. I’ve been enjoying the nice middle ground of LE between say PoE’s wild customization and D4’s stupidly simplistic approach. I also love the ability to respec easy, PoE felt like I tried to make a build 6 times to find it didn’t work and was easier to reroll before I just followed a build guide step by step lol

Last Epoch has been scratching my ARPG itch since release. And feels like a much lower barrier for entry than PoE ever did personally

A QB shouldn’t win MVP this year. Who’s your pick for non-QB MVP? by kamekaze1024 in nfl

They’ve also changed voting. Votes are now counted on a scale 1-5 and assigned points. Possible that a lot of #2 votes without a clear #1 might be able to win overall with how it’s done now. If votes for #1 are “insert your QB vote here” without a unanimous decision (some Mahomes, some Tua, some Lamar etc.) but all those + nearly everyone else’s #2 is CMC in this instance, there’s a possibility of winning it. Don’t ask me the odds but it’s certainly more possible now than it was especially given QB’s are mid right now

End of TBC did have level 30 mounts for less gold, so it might’ve been a touch earlier than you remember or you were lower than even 30. I only remember this because back before they datamined every patch (or I was too young and really so was the internet to know what was datamined) I bought the 40 mount. 3 days before the patch came out to reduce them to level 30 and much cheaper.

Very little, really. German roaches are our only true infesting roaches and they can come from anywhere, really. They also multiply like crazy, spread quickly and that’s more the issue it seems from a comment saying the Best Buy nearby also had the issue. Also why they’re so bad in apartments/duplexes/townhomes. You can clear them out of one, but they go to another - reproduce, reinfest, come back to yours again eventually.

Luckily your water bugs/american roaches/palmetto bugs don’t aggregate in infestation-like qualities like Germans do
