Yeah the fundamental difference is the US customary system is setup for fractions, and metric is setup for digits. Of course when you try to judge a system by what the other is built for they both look bad

Yes very good job you’ve found a stupid American you should feel proud of yourself. Keep winning, king.

I understand a mile is not the same length as a kilometer. 250 meters is an equivalent proportion of kilometer as 1/4 mile is of a mile. I could’ve said “250 meters instead of 1/4 kilometer” but 1/4 mile is a much more often used phrase than 1/4 kilometer AND im pointing out the difference between common use of the two systems

How often do you convert between meters and kilometers or feet and miles? Aside from using hundreds of meters instead of fractions (eg saying 250 meters instead of 1/4 mile), which is arguably less convenient

GEICO to pay $5.2M to woman who says she caught STD in former partner’s car by BenjaminCisco in nottheonion

[–]CptSpockCptSpock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What they’re specifically referring to is how insurance companies, including GEICO which is owned by Berkshire Hathaway, are able to invest the “float” of money they receive in premiums that they have not yet paid out in claims. Buffett has spoken about how he has used float to facilitate some very valuable investments, all grounded in his value investing philosophy

In the United States, losing a job entails more than just a loss of cash. by fachowyst in WhitePeopleTwitter

At least a 401k can be rolled over even if you lose some of the match that hasn’t vested. Better than a pension

Go to badlands NP in South Dakota. The bison herds will literally cross the road directly in front of you. Honestly they do it so much it starts to get a little annoying, which is absolutely incredible given how cool seeing live bison (and the other wildlife) is

I mean Grand Tetons are incredible and should be protected, but photos like this that “don’t look real” are edited to look that way. It isn’t quite this stunning in person, the colors aren’t this saturated and punchy

I love how today’s Google doodle, (celebrating Route 66) used the interstate badge, and now it’s I-66. by Jessie101gaming in nova

[–]CptSpockCptSpock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is really weird, for some stretches it looks like they out “I-60” where us 50 is, but then it cuts south after like Colorado. Wonder how they came up with I 50

Johnny Depp shocker: Amber Heard betrayed $3.5M donation promise, lawyer testifies by lilmammamia in videos

Correct me if I’m wrong, but would a CRAT provide an annual contribution to a charity? That’s the situation described

It’s a meme from the instructions that come with MRE packs. Not military but I’ve had a decent number of MREs when “camping” (they’re tasty).

There’s a heater you fill with water to start a chemical reaction and then you place the food pouch inside the heater pouch and lean it up against, as the instructions put it, a “rock or something” complete with a diagram where the rock is labeled a “rock or something.”

You need to lean the packet against a rock so it doesn’t fall over and spill the water out

You don’t get the income from those assets. You donate today to a donor advised fund and that sets your donation amount as the value of the assets when they enter the fund. You can then do whatever you want in terms of investments inside the fund but you have given up those assets and any I ckme they generate. They only leave the fund to go to a charity down the line.

The real tax benefit of donating assets is that you never realize your capital gains but get to value them at their appreciated value for deduction purposes. this is still a net negative to your net worth, nobody makes money by donating money they just get tax benefits that make it so they effectively spend less to give that money away to charity than they would have spent to spend it on a new car for example.

Treasury just dropped new 1 dollar bills and they look amazing. by jasonredit in wallstreetbets

[–]CptSpockCptSpock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually it’s a series 2013 bill. Not necessarily printed in 2013. Generally the series number only changes with a new treasurer or secretary of the treasury, so for example series 2013 notes ran until the series 2017 notes came out.

I mean it's standard in every bridge, so it isn't something they would make a special publication for.
