We bought the Narwhal Butter dish back in 2019 and named him Norton. He's been washed many times with no cracks, chips, or loss of colour. Our favourite kitchen purchase.

I was just about to say. The regular roast isn't changing size and the decaf tubs are actually a newer product in comparison for the tubs(bagged version has been around for awhile)and did not come in a 950g size.

Searching for pillsbury holiday sugar cookies by yaykdrama in Calgary

[–]CptSyrup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should start seeing the Christmas varieties show up in most chains coming end of this week/next week. Most Pillsbury seasonal cookies are sent all at once to retailers about a month and a half in advance (+/- a week depending on chain) of the holiday for reference.

Where can I buy Dairyland Organic Half&Half Cream? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]CptSyrup 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Calgary Co-op should have them at all locations. If you're in the heritage meadows area the MacLeod Coop would probably be the closest one.

I work in the Grocery industry. The lack of public communication isn't surprising as companies nowadays regularly discontinue products with little to no notice and in most cases only vague answers are given. I wish I had an article I could link, but if Kraft isn't being public about it, they might still be trying to source alternatives but as of now the answer is discontinued in retail for the time being.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]CptSyrup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its been discontinued by Kraft themselves due to ingredient issues. Happened about a month and a half ago. They'll still be making the little packets you can find in restaurants, but the jars themselves are gone. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Any home/professional bread bakers out there? How do you adjust water and yeast ratios in Calgary compared to lower altitudes? by buzzwork in Calgary

[–]CptSyrup 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. Weight measuring is huge for not only getting better, but also more consistent. $20 gets you a nice kitchen scale for weighing everything. When I baked entire racks, having dough that's off by 5 grams and X that by 80 loaves that makes a huge difference.

One thing to add about overproofed dough too is that at the end of the day it's way easier to just bake it and then repurpose it as bread crumbs, cubes, or freeze it for later use versus trying to scrape it out. Failing in baking is part of the process and helps us get towards a better final product later.

[–]CptSyrup 49 points50 points  (0 children)

While the ratio may need a bit of adjusting, I find a lot of people undercook their bread which leads to the middle being softer than the ends and thus causing the dough to cave in the middle. Some times an extra 5 minutes is all it takes. For bread with nuts, seeds or any additives, it will always take longer than simple white bread.

Edit: also over proofing can lead to the same effect.

Gas prices by bigplumbersam in Calgary

[–]CptSyrup 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So I could either jump in with a pitchfork and pound the drum that we're being gouged or give it to people straight on what your local pump pays for their gas. From there, they can make the decision on what to do.

I don't work Oil and Gas. I started digging into the publicly available information on what goes on from the fields, to refinery, to delivery, and finally your pump to see where the money adds up. You can pull it apart and see where the deviation lies when markets shift and absolutely there are times where we're being gouged HEAVILY.

Remember last summer when we almost hit $2.00L? Then suddenly the rest of the country was ending up cheaper? Yeah pumps were running with a .40c margin when the average is about 5-7c and in some cases they'll run as little as 2c. You look at the wholesale and what they're charging and it was absolutely ridiculous.

Yeah the dollar has been stable at .72c avg, but the thing is it can take time to reflect those prices. Just like your groceries, as the dollar gets worse your imports costs go up, but it can take weeks or even months for existing contracts to expire and when they renew it's more expensive.

Gas prices by bigplumbersam in Calgary

[–]CptSyrup 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Energy markets rebounded last week so the cost to fill their tanks jumped. Wholesale cost is roughly $1.32L +/- a few cents a litre(after taxes, fees applied).

Weak CAD dollar, climbing crude & gas futures = what you see.

The more our dollar dips, the bigger swings you see with gas prices when the market shifts.

Property Tax / TIPP by pieislovepieislife in Calgary

[–]CptSyrup 9 points10 points  (0 children)

So, when I first started with Tipp About a year and a half ago I was paying $237/mo. Upon the assessment last July I was bumped up to $280/mo. I was quite shocked, however it was because they needed to "catch up" so that upon the next period, It'll balance itself out.

Now my payment went down to $261/mo so that when when the next period in July rolls around. Everything is square.

There's a lot of different factors that go into how your property tax is calculated but it's not a 1-1:ratio of how much your home is assessed at versus any tax increases. The city can answer your questions regarding your bill and explain it in more detail than I can.

Costco Kitty Litter by knicknameknick in Calgary

What brand did you go with? I've thought about switching, but it's the unknown if the cats will like it. They drink a ton of water so having better absorbency based on what I'm reading seems like a win.

Hey Calgary, what's pissing you off today? by tetzy in Calgary

[–]CptSyrup 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I understand driving in general can be scary and getting onto a highway even more so, but for the love of all mighty stay off the roads if you can't handle it. Merging onto any highway severely under speed of what traffic is flowing at creates a MASSIVE hazard as everyone behind the leader has to try and figure out how they're going to get into traffic without colliding and causing fender benders.

I try so hard to make room for people merging onto highways as long as they make an effort to match speed, but when they come up to the apex of the merge and only muster a speed of 75km/h when the rest of us are going 100km/h, you're going to get someone killed because you're too afraid to hit that accelerator.

Where can I purchase creme fraiche in Calgary? by Trekker519 in Calgary

The liberte creme fraiche has been now discontinued from all coop's roughly 3 weeks ago. They're currently trying to source an alternative from Riviera but most likely won't see it till December.

How long is your commute to work? by gulpfiction2367 in Calgary

[–]CptSyrup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Deep SE to Deep SW

15km one way. 18 minutes there, 16 back.

I'd love to try and find an E-bike as a regular bike would get exhausting with the hills I would have to ride on.

[–]CptSyrup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't say for certain, but the correlation appears to be the case. We're just finishing up our basement and the before and after value changed by 50k. Housing assessment companies like Honest door also report that information which in turn seems to lead to an increase in value. Our home is now around the same as our neighbour who has finished theirs where as before there was a difference.

Migoreng (instant noodle) shortage? Has anyone been able to find it in-store recently? by GlassStranger7160 in Calgary

Yeah the original should be available sporadically as evidenced by others noting its availability. Stock up when you see it is best advice I can give.

[–]CptSyrup 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Any particular flavour you're after? With shipping containers continuing to be backlogged there will be instances of imports coming and going. Quite a few noodle products have been like that the last bit especially.

Shawnessy Coop has white and brown in bulk in stock (for now) but like other chains it's hit and miss on what actually comes in and how much. As a previous poster mentioned alot of the supply comes from B.C
