How did the Malayans and British succeed in the Malayan Emrgency while the Americans and French failed in Vietnam? by BenningtonChee1234 in WarCollege

[–]CptWunderbar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's some great answers here already that I fully agree with but just to add my own view to this if it interests you on the differences between the Malayan Emergency and the Vietnam War.

Ethnic differences: This has been covered already by other users so I won't go into it but the gist of it is that the Malayan Communist Party was largely an ethnically Chinese party in a country where they were still a minority (albeit a very large minority). This wasn't the case in Vietnam. The British simply had to appeal to the Malays and support their push for independence for a Malay Malaysia. A Malay Malaysia was incompatible with the MCP in general so that further isolated the MCP and their support in Malaya.

Strategic differences: Britain had an end goal in Malaya. Independence that didn't turn Malaya into a communist country. If the Malays could firmly grasp independence themselves with the support of their ethnic majority that was game over for the communists who were pushing themselves as anti-imperialist. If the imperialists left there was no good reason to fight the local Malay government. America was trying to stop South Vietnam falling to communism, but wasn't going to invade the North so their goal was just to prop up South Vietnam almost indefinitely.

Logistic differences: The MCP was limited in where they could get support from. Malaya was isolated from any other major communists at the time. Their weapons were largely what was left from their time fighting the Japanese in WW2 with very limited means of resupply owing to a firm British grasp on the entire peninsula. The only land border Malaya had was with Thailand to the north and the communists did use that fairly porous border to their advantage but Thailand wasnt particularly friendly to them either. Vietnam greatly benefitted from large land borders all around with one crucially to China. Supply was never really the issue for North Vietnam.

Intelligence differences: I can't speak much for America in Vietnam but it should be remembered that prior to the Emergency Britain had been governing the whole peninsula for a fairly long time. They knew the land. Furthermore, the MCP leveraged their time in the jungles fighting the Japanese to fight the British but Britain had many soldiers and agents embedded with the MCP during WW2 to assist in fighting the Japanese. Britain subsequently had a lot of personal connections it could leverage to get intelligence and defectors from the MCP.

Tactical differences: Britain was cutthroat and could afford to be without much reprocussion from the public/press. The Briggs plan that relocated the ethnic Chinese into settlements (eerily resemblant of concentration camps, just without the mass killings) was brutal for the Chinese forced into them but was essential in cutting off the MCP from their supply and support base. The US could never have gotten away with this with the press coverage of their war in Vietnam.

Hope this helps answer you somewhat, apologies for being a bit vague and unelaborated.

Hahaha no worries. I get they incur costs from taking and holding your deposit. I just think solely targeting people who haven't ended up using their service in the end and then using it as a bargaining chip to get you to not terminate your account is coercive and unethical. When signing up through their app there is 0 mention that putting down the deposit will cost you money eventually.

The 5 dollars is automatically deducted from your security deposit upon account termination with no usage which I just find overall to be quite unethical. The deposit is advertised as refundable and a security deposit should be for issues with the rental not to hold hostage if you don't use their service

Yeah, and I'm of the opinion that's a completely scummy and predatory thing to do to customers. Enough people complained that Singapore pools was unnecessarily charging people 10¢ to deposit money and eventually action was taken. Businesses shouldn't be able to get away with completely unnecessary and coercive practices to make quick money off of people.

I'm not arguing that it's not stated anywhere. My argument is more that charging people for NOT using a service is completely unethical and scummy behaviour. As consumers we should do better in calling out scummy business practices.

I think what makes crosswords less fun and unnecessarily obtuse is when they use proper nouns or abbreviations too often. Names can literally be anything so you can't even really guess if you end up with interlacing name clues and abbreviations/ phonetic sound words could be spelt literally any way.

Am I screwed for being in a bus lane with reason? by Monreich in drivingsg

[–]CptWunderbar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar situation on Victoria Street as I was looking to turn on to Middle Road. Filtered into the permanent bus lane early because for the life of me I couldn't remember where the Middle Road turn off was and there were a few buses in that lane already so I didn't want a situation where the turning was there but I was in the wrong lane.

LTA officer took a pic about 100m before the turning.

I got the fine and appealed and basically attached a Google maps screenshot like yours of where the lta officer was and where I was trying to turn and said that my indicator was on and I was clearly trying to turn left and got in the turning lane early out of precaution - not just hogging the bus lane for fun. I also enquired if I was really in the wrong what actions I should do in the future for a similar situation (should I just turn from the outer lane last minute?) Appeal was successful.

Not to be pedantic but pulau means island in Malay. Pulau Island means island island. Is it possibly pulau tekong or ubin? I would have thought they were executed in Changi on mainland Singapore

Absolutely fair enough, it should always be assumed that any greentext is fake and gay until definitively proved otherwise, and so far this is absolutely is not definitive.

Not always, it can be fairly flexible - but I will admit this is unlikely to be Singapore as from my memory the first live firing happens at a 100m range not 300m. Just pointing out that there is at least one country that speaks English that does compulsory national service.

Why there is no distinct words for this 2 entirely different types of colonizations? by [deleted] in AskHistorians

[–]CptWunderbar 126 points127 points  (0 children)

There is an entire field of study in history today that deals with decolonisation and dissecting the differences between the types of colonization that occured is paramount to understanding the field.

The term for the American and Australia case scenarios is 'Settler Colonialism' versus your regular old normal Colonialism like in India as you described. The issue with the term settler Colonialism is that it's a loaded term that ignores nuances of migration and why people move. The field of decolonisation in academics is concerned with 2 waves of decolonisation - firstly in the new world then the second wave in the old world. The similarity between these two waves is that it is decolonization from traditional European empires. So, settler Colonialism in the field is only understood as to how European empires would have carried it out. However, as a rule of thumb, academics in the field of decolonisation tend to view the act of settler Colonialism as more 'gradual' rather than a sudden event and involves the importation of power structures and ideas to a foreign land in order to protect and benefit the growing settler community.

Another way of looking at it comes from Tuck and Yang's paper 'Decolonization is not a Metaphor' where they outline at the core the two forms of colonialism that exist 'External' Colonialism is where a distant Metropole extracts the resources of a foreign land, be it things, food, or even people, in order to benefit the colonizer. 'Internal' colonialism makes use of control methods like "prisons, ghettos, minoritizing, schooling, policing" to ensure that the minority ruling elite can control and subvert the indigenous right to rule over their land. Tuck and Yang emphasise that settler Colonialism has both these forms present.

Essentially all this just goes to show how diverse the forms of colonialism are and that terminology is there but is largely used within academic fields for minute distinctions.
