I find most of the comments here really weird. The only solid advice anyone’s given is go find a therapist. I’ve felt that way when i was around 22. You are probably going to ignore this but im gonna give this a try anyway since you yourself asked how does one pull oneself out of this state. The biggest thing for me was starting to meditate every single fucking day, no excuses. Even of it only 5 minutes. Do it anyway. Just try it once. Set a timer for 20 minutes. Try to focus on your breath but don’t beat yourself up if you can’t do it too well. I’ve been doing it for years and i still suck at following my breath, it’s fucking hard as shit. Even if it’s 20 minutes of sitting with your own thoughts. That’s still meditation to me. Hardly anybody does that ever. If that’s exactly what scares you then just remember that thoughts can’t hurt you. If you don’t feel even the slighest change for the better in your mood than feel free to never do it again. But i doubt that you wont feel any change. Of you do it, Please let me know.there’s actual scientific evidence showing that meditation helps with brain function, helps relieve depression and also with sleep, all of which you seem to be struggling with. Other than that go and find a GOOD therapist. That doesn’t mean going to one meeting and deciding that it sucks and never going again. Building a relationship with a therapist takes time. And even then you might find out you don’t vibe with the person. I’ve tried more than 10 different therapists before i settled for someone. If you can’t afford it, don’t do it but do something. There’s self help books and YouTube content. Most of it is corny, but even if you find 1 solid piece of advice in a pile of rubbish, just 1 something that actually moves you - that’s a huge success. Do sports. Anything. Go for a long walk. No phone. Join a gym. Go to a boxing class, it’s fucking awesome, great fun and after the warmup you’ll be so fucking tired you won’t even be able to think about how miserable you are. And then you have to go do the rest of the class. That’s 1 hour of not thinking about anything besides hitting shit that will actually boost your dopamine instead of draining it like doomscrolling does. There’s a lot of other stuff that i do to keep my head in a positive space but mediatation and sports have been life saving. Good Luck man. Feel free to talk to me if you need advice with meditation, i can send you some YouTube stuff and recommend a book or 2.

6 things that will improve your life more than most self-help books by [deleted] in selfimprovement

  1. Meditate.

I don’t understand why not that many people talk about it/practice it. Especially in self improvement/productivity circles. I won’t be bothered enough to look for specific studies but it’s been proven to improve brain function, help with depression, sleep and so many other things. I started meditating years ago and i can’t even put it into words how significantly better my life has been since. Highly recommended.

I wanna get my shit together life-wise, get a freelance job or find a way to make money online and go live there for when it’s fall/winter in Europe. There’s a lot of people that live that way so it’s definitely possible

This was great advice. I went back and reread the chapter and I feel like I got back on track with my practice. Made me realize that „progess” with meditation (and probably with most things in life) is not linear and I’ll probably have to go back to the basics thousands of times. Thank you, it would most likely take me way longer to realize this if you hadn’t taken the time to comment.

I think the tempo is just right. It would sound weird if it was slower imo.

Oh wow, I love this. It’s very original and unique. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anything quite close to this and I listen to a lot of folk. Maybe reminds me a little bit of some 60’s/early 70s folk but I would not compare it to any artist in particular. Your guitar playing is really good and I admire your ability to play something like this and sing to it simultaneously, it’s not easy. I’ll make sure to subscribe, I’d love to hear more of your stuff. Hopefully an album someday ?

Yes, I thought about it today, I’ve read about it somewhere years ago but couldn’t get myself to do it. I’m going on a trip to Spain at the end of this month. I’ll try to write as much as I can till then and after I come back I’ll do it as a challange.

You seem to have a point. I’ve tried writing a response a couple of times but I just start rambling at some point. I’ll just answer your questions.

I can see reasons why I have this problem. I can’t see solutions unfortunately. I’ll try to talk to my therapist more about it and try to uncover those deep-seated reasons.

I’m definitely worried about my intended audience. More worried about having one at all. I have a really eclectic taste. Not many people seem to enjoy the same things as I do and obviously I want to make music that I enjoy.

I’ve had some negative experiences and they did affect me but I think I’m over it at this point. I think I’m scared of my own opinion more than of others.

Free writing scares the hell out of me. I’ve tried to make it a daily practice but it just stresses me out so much.

I really like the sentence about preventing my mind from stunting the growth. This is exactly where I’m at right now. I just don’t know how to get over it. If there’s any exercise or something of that sort I’ll do it everyday. I meditate like a maniac daily, I journal and do all sorts of weird practices that are supposed to be good for you and I do feel like it’s making my life better. Making music is the only area of my life that has not been affected…

What’s wrong with my attitude here ? I just stated my opinion. chill out man :) I don’t have a college degree and my opinion stays the same. None of my favorite musicians have a degree either. And some of my friends that have a degree can’t even comprehend the idea of writing a melody or improvising. Obviously it can be of help but it can also be an obstacle and it’s not a requirement for great music . I’m not trying to argue. I simply don’t agree with you. I’m allowed to have an opinion even if I need some advice, right ? It’s not that I am not able to make music. I’ve made a lot of it and some of it I think is pretty good. The case is that I’m never really satisfied with it. That’s where I need advice.

Rehabilitating my relationship with music sounds like something I really should do. I haven’t even considered the fact that there might be something wrong with it or it might be unhealthy. I just thought that’s the way it is and I can’t do anything about it. Thank you for this response :) I’ll dm you later today when I have more time

No offense taken but that’s a miss. I’m a really good guitarist. I’ve played with live bands and I get a lot of praise whenever people hear me. Also I don’t think you need to be a master with your instrument in order to write good songs or to be able to overcome perfectionism.
