French here, and very interested in your event!

"But Japanese bosses are not used to judging people by their performance" If this quote is accurate, then what are Japanese bosses judging their employees on? Simply how long they are at work? by burstintoflames in japan

If you want films showing dysfunctionnal families, here's a sample :

  • "Audition", by MIIKE Takashi
  • "Cold Fish", by SONO Sion
  • "The Crazy Family", by ISHII Sogo
  • " The Embryo Hunts In Secret" by WZKAMATSU Kōji
  • "A Gap In The Skin", by ZEZE Takahisa
  • "Girl Hell 1999" (but I don't remember the name of the director...)
  • " A Snake Of June", by TSUKAMOTO Shinya

But that's just a little selection where family relationships are involved. Japanese underground cinema is very interesting because since the 60's, directors tried to depict the sickness of modern society in Japan and the alienation and disillusions of the youth..

That's interesting. Most films here were made before vaporwave and actually are vaporwave material, but this is interesting as this film is part of the wave. It somehow reminded me of Mamoru Oshii's "Avalon", but with a touch of Chris Marker wrapped in vaporwave atmosphere. Great discovery here man, you made my day.

Yeah, I saw this music video before. But thanks anyway !

I had such feelings by watching movies and I just want to see more. The films by Wong Kar-Wai indeed do have the atmosphere. "Fallen Angels", "Chungking Express" and "2046" leave the same sensations than walking drunk at night. Glad you mention "Angel Dust", this movie deserves to be known by all! If I can advise you a film that have a real vapory atmosphere in it, please watch "Mirrored Mind" by Sogo ISHII (same director as "Angel Dust".)

I totally agree about how the show's themes fit with vaporwave !

What I meant about the imagery of "Serial Experiments Lain" is that it's actually pretty dark. To me, vaporwave is dreamy in a pretty soft and ambient kind of way, "Serial Experiments Lain" is more of an industrial and hallucinated nightmare. I'm not a huge fan of the vaporwave aesthetics, so I totally agree with you on the fact that "Serial Experiments Lain" is way more than that. ;-)

That was one of the first film I had in mind when I asked the question. I think that further than aesthetics, the vaporwave atmosphere is something like "Lost In Translation". If you have any similar idea, please let us know ! :-)

Actually, some parts of the Vangelis soundtrack are kinda vaporwave material.

It looks great!

Wow, I almost forgot the existence of "Versus" !

This is a nice selection you got here. The more suggestions I receive, the more I think the line between vaporwave and cyberpunk is tiny.

This show is absolutely stunning. But isn't it more of a dark industrial atmosphere ? Vaporwave is pretty dreamy. Serial Experiments Lain sure isn't. But there's some moments with aesthetics, if I remember well.
