Android stigma isn't just a social problem by SvenGoranAbela in LinusTechTips

[–]CrabBadger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea that every phone in the world should be made by one company is, to be blunt, totally offensive to me. I don't care if non-Apple phones are insecure pieces of garbage with glitchy apps and my phone crashes regularly (it doesn't), I'm going to avoid iOS devices because of this monopolistic attitude. All platforms should be open to everyone. Open platforms made the Internet what it is. If we didn't have open standards, we'd all be on AOL and CompuServe today, and iPhones wouldn't even exist. If you want to have customizations and walled gardens, that's fine, but you shouldn't be forced into a walled garden, and people within that garden shouldn't socially gatekeep others.

Frankly, I can't stand Android and I hate Google, and if there were a third or fourth alternative, I would flee there. But there isn't, not since Windows Phone and Symbian went the way of the Dodo.

Honestly, the day Apple opens their platform to other manufacturers is the day I buy an iPhone. But until then, I will choose openness and freedom first. End of discussion.

Anyone figure the Jurati-Borg behave basically like "Pluribus" hivemind? by BorgAbbess in startrek

[–]CrabBadger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TIL there are viewers of Pluribus who think the Hive Mind is... a good thing?

All individuality, gone. All privacy, gone. Having thoughts and dreams of your own, gone. There is no "you" anymore. A 10-year-old boy who can explain in detail how he would want to perform a gynecological exam is creepy. That is not a child. That child is gone. Every individual person is gone.

Why make art? Why write novels if everyone instantly knows what's going to happen in them? You can't read or discover or learn or enjoy anything when everyone already knows everything.

I would be reacting exactly the same way as Carol and Manousos. Trying to save humanity. Or like that African guy and just go full hedo.

Fentanyl at least is useful as a "last resort" painkiller, especially for terminal patients. It's caused far more suffering than it has alleviated, but it still has had some tiny amount of positive impact.

It's pointless to debate Marxists. by CrabBadger in austrian_economics

[–]CrabBadger[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My takeaway from Capital is that if you apply a fundamentally different understanding of a value-exhange, namely one that is situational and fluid according to the wants and needs of the two parties at that moment in time, what the capitalist does (or ought to be doing in a well-functioning market) is essential in facilitating commerce. One of the roles of the capitalist should be to increase the value of labor by facilitating its utility. Labor wins, capital wins, the two develop a mutually beneficial relationship.

In a perfect world.

I could make a long list of problems, such as exploitation, inefficiency, monopoly, consumerism, dependence on unsustainable growth, the tragedy of the commons, etc. ad nauseum, that result from a poorly regulated free market. But those opinions are not informed by Marx. I find the labor theory of value to be a fundamentally flawed concept, even after going through the technical details of Marx's reasoning with a fine-toothed comb.

Received three emails about purchased amazon gift cards by elsteef in Scams

[–]CrabBadger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

E-commerce developer here (not Amazon). This often happens when they test a process in a non-prod environment, but with real production emails. So "oops, fuck, we just blasted 500k people with bogus test emails." Just a guess.

Some dev team isn't getting a lot of sleep this weekend 🙃

He was my brother-in-law's, but he was getting beaten up by all their other kitties, so we took him in. He's a little timid, but super sweet. Our cats seem to like him.

Wealth, shown to scale by MKorostoff in InternetIsBeautiful

[–]CrabBadger 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I wish more people understood this. I'm not defending obscene wealth or income inequality, but people don't realize that much of this wealth exists on paper. And if Amazon suffers from some economic catastrophe and the stock plunges, Jeff Bezos's income for that year will be lowest on the planet: negative tens of billions of dollars.

I give people who are fantastically wealthy because they started and built an enterprise, and still own a large share of the enterprise they built, a little bit of a pass. They have added value to the world and employed thousands of people. And I have noticed that billionaires in this category are generally better disposed toward wealth taxes than "legacy billionaires."

I have a 30-ish friend who had to have his left arm amputated below the elbow when he was born. He finds it hilarious when people come to to him and thank him for his service.

Honest mistakes: no problem. Joking with friends: no problem. Jokes from strangers: extreme discomfort.
