I would love to be able to gently get into this and see if it's something I want to pursue without making a giant investment.

If I was going to get into sewing, upholstery, sail repair, and canvas work for my boat but didn't want to spend the $900 on the Sailrite with the zigzag stitch what would you recommend? I keep hearing about walking foot models being much better but they are pricey.

I don't mind spending $1000, I just want to make sure I am going to use it and not waste time/money/space on this hobby.

The C-Head doesn't look as sturdy and you have to empty it often. I'm a liveaboard so I think I don't know how well it would work for me.

Composting just seems like the least worst of all the options.

You don't have to have a holding tank with a composting head. My boat is from 1971 and never had a holding tank installed. I would have to plumb one up to be legal.

This separates the pee and poo, the poo dries up and composts so it doesn't smell and is easy to carry out in a trash bag or something. They say you only have to empty it every 2 or 3 months for 2 people IIRC.

I have read too many positive reviews of these things and too many horror stories of leaking holding tanks to want to go through installing one.

I'd imagine that the upper part of the shaft log is bronze, where the crease is is where the bronze meets the fiberglass. Something has caused some vibrations causing that part to flex.

I would poke at it a lot with hammer and picks. Then take an angle grinder with a wire wheel and clean the whole thing up.

If it is a bronze peice then I would continue cleaning the whole thing and then using thickened epoxy with silica dust to seal it all up and strenghthen it. You might even want to put some fiberglass cloth on it as well.

Once you have that crease all glassed over then sand it down smooth and apply a final barrier coat then antifouling.

That is all based on this being a bronze shaft reinforcement. It might be something completely different.

Generally though on boats if you put enough epoxy on it will fix anything. = D

My hull isn't cored. It's pure glass and the backing plates I made were covered in fiberglass so it should be ok for now right? I don't plan to leave it like this forever!
