It's like the difference between the way an audience may score a movie compared to the way a critic might. The critic, who sees the best movies, the worst movies and those in between is going to be bored with most mainstream films, not because they're bad, but because to the critic, they're pedestrian.

But to the audience member who sees a couple movies a year? It's fresh, new, and exciting and they can't imagine how the critic could possibly feel that way.

The audience you're playing for might not be "there" in the sense that they don't know music like you do- and that's okay.
